Gentlemen,

On 04. 5 stock wheels and tires I have had multiple valve stem failures in the last month. After the 3rd one let go I had all the valve stems, (to include the spare), changed.

On this last one, I drove home 3 miles from the shop that installed my new Buckstop bumper and parked in the driveway. While having lunch, we heard a bang and then a pressure release. I thought an air compressor hose had broken in the garage. The wife thought the water pump in the basement had failed. We were running around trying to find the cause of the noise and noticed the flat tire in the driveway. Sure enough! Valve stem failure.

I have one of the first 04. 5 duallies to come off the assembly line. I took delivery 2-1-04 and it has 24K miles on it.

They are brass tubes that appear to be glued to the rubber "bung" that goes through the rim. The brass is corroding, (green), which breaks the glue seal and the tire goes flat.

I would like to switch them out to the steel heavy truck type that are installed with a nut on the outside but, the tire shop says there isn't enough room for the nut on the outboard flange of the rim.

So, wiggle your dually valve stems and make sure they don't leak.

Anyone else have this problem?

Is there anything from the outside that can que someone in that there maybe deterioation on the inside.

Just checked mine and they look good to me and no leaks after wiggling them around. Mine has 24K on it and built a couple days after yours.

I learned about the rubber valve stems the hard way... going down the interstate at 65 MPH hauling a heavy slide-in truck camper.

One of the first modifications I do on my dually is take it to the local truck tire shop and have the rubber valve stems replaced with steel stems. I use the short steel stems along with the factory supplied plastic extensions which makes checking the pressure and adding air an easy job.

For photos and more details, see TDR Magazine Issue 44, page 55.

My truck had the rubber/brass valve stems. The first summer I had the truck, 2 stems broke with a week or 2, of each other on the rear duals. Wasn't hauling/pulling anything, either.

BigBob, what are you going to do with the Tire Man when you rotate the tires?

Won't be much rotating except from side to side. However, I don't think very many Big Rigs rotate either. A guy could always rotate the tires on the rims, but I am not planning on doing that unless an extreme condition occurs.

At this point, I prefer the peace of mind knowing that my valve stems are going to hold up while towing, and are easy to adjust the tire pressure when I'm not towing. The trade-offs are worth it to me. JMO

Time flys by so quick I hate to say I can't recall now, but my 03 or the 04 had a valve stem come apart. I think it was the 03, and it happened the day I was leaving on a trip. The local Goodyear store fixed me up for $10 and had me on my way in about 10 minutes.

I ordered Tiremans stems

I ordered them today. As I understand it it mounts from the inside of the rim so I will have to dismount at least one side of the tire again  I hope they work as advertised as they are not cheap. Ken Irwin

I really like mine! I tried the ZIP™ Airless Valve Extenders prior, they were garbage!

The Tire Man Valve Stem are a guality mandrel bent valve stem.
