Bring a pencil and paper to write down the numbers.

Key in the ignition, engine off

Turn the ignition to the run/on position (do not start)

Back to off

On

Off

On and leave on. Leave the ignition in each position at least 3/4 of a second. If you are too fast, or too slow, it will not complete the cycle.

In the odometer window the on board computer will show two sets of codes (if any) PCU and ECU followed by P DONE.

Here is a link to the generic OBD code definitions.

I went and bought a little thing from Superchips, called a tuner/CODE READER for the 98. 5-2001 trucks it does all that on off stuff for me. It was cheaper than a trip to the dealer, plus a "little"more power. Its been working fine so far. DH

I am not familiar with the Superchips code reader, but if it is ODB II compliant, it should read any vehical sold for manufacture in the US from 1996 to present.

3grumpy, for your 2002, the on, off, on, off, on should display any codes in the PCM and ECM.
