Is pulling #1 injector and sticking something in the hole to watch piston movement the best or only way?

I found JLeonards puller pic and can make it easy enough. Read in the FSM on the procecure for injector removal and install. They mention discarding a washer on the injector and replacing it. Is this necessary and where could I get some?

I want to check TDC and set the pump timing. Bought a dial in dicator setup for the pump and borrowed a barring tool.

Nah, use the valve drop method. Its a lot easier.

The Cummins is an interference engine, the valves will touch the top of the pistons at TDC. Find TDC with the pin. Put a valve spring compressor on #1 intake valve and compress until the valve touches the piston. Back the engine up until the valve quits moving down them run it forward till you get a little lift on a dial indicator. Mark the damper pulley at a handy spot. Run the engine forward until the valve starts dropping again and stop and the same measurement on the indicator. Mark the damper pulley using the same spot as before. Half way between is true TDC. Remember to back the engine up past the first mark then run it ahead to take all the lash out of the gears. Mark your damper with something permanent at the 1/2 way mark and your done.

Remember to remove compressor before starting. :D

I purchased the one @ Geno's Garage. It was worthless untill I redesigned it and now it works like a hot knife through warm goat cheese. How the heck do they recommend a tool that don't even work? Do they actually WORK on these engine @ Geno's Garage!!!!!!?

I'll be fine... ... ...

I took an old injector nut and ran a piece of all-thread through it with a washer and nut top and bottom. Worked good.
