5.9 in an Excursion

It is almost done, I have a little bit of work to do yet too get all my tools in place and what not, and I am still going to build a crane some time this summer to mount on the bed, more pictures to come later. Here is how she looks so far. I see why you guys work on some of these projects for a long time, there is a lot of hours getting thing to fit and hook up all together so everything works. The loaner pickup was a 1993 two wheel drive 250 with a Getrag. I had to make the front cross-member and motor mounts, I used the trans mount from the pickup, just modified it to fit the truck frame. I used the master cylinder and slave off the pickup, the radiator, and aftercooler also came off the pickup. I have to run electric fans because of the belt driven air compressor doesn't allow room for belt driven fan. The intake horn came off of 2001 pickup in the signature because it has the Banks intake on it, it made the bend nice to clear the booster for the brakes. I changed the rearend to 4. 88:1 gear ratio, and added a little bit smaller tires so the bed sits lower and by some strange stroke of luck the speedometer seems to be pretty much right on the money (at least the odometer is with the mile markers on the road, haven't used the GPS yet to check it). I have to do some work to the power steering pump, I was told that the tank doesn't hold enough oil for the big truck steering gear so I am going to mount a remote tank and see if that helps. I make the truck air-ride in the rear as well. Behind the tool box is a 400 gallon fuel tank that stretches to the other side of the truck, and a 10 foot bed behind there with GatorHyde sprayed on the top and bottom of the bed. A 3 inch receiver hitch, with two trailer plugs, one for RV style, and one for pulling farm implements. With more tricks to come as time passes by.

yes, it is a Eaton 2 speed, 4. 88:1 high range, and roughly 6. 56:1 in low range. I wish it was a little faster, top speed might be 70 MPH I don't have a tach yet to see. It is fast enough most days, this truck will mainly be used on trips less than 30 miles.

Good Job. Great pictures. Nice project. I think your gears are a little slow for 70 MPH. Our 92 likes 1800 @ 62 MPH. We figure your gears make 50 MPH @1800 if you have 7:50 20 tires. We put a Brownie on a F600 gas and that made that slow boat a lot better. If you are not familiar with Brownies, they are a 3 speed auxiliary trans. There is the 5000 series, big enough for your truck, specifically a 5831. We used a 6231 on ours because there are more of them around. We mounted it where the carrier bearing is. They come either . 85 over or . 73 over and the the same under. Middle is 1:1. We don't shift ours, just leave it in over drive for highway use and manually shift into underdrive for slow work.

Also, in our Getrag, we run it a quart over and are using NV 4500 75w85 weight oil. We fill it through the top bolt hole in the PTO cover. We are in S. oregon, so 75 weight is ok, it shifts a little stiff in the winter but after a few miles it's OK. We learned about the quart over on the TDR. We changed the oil weight to suit our needs.

Tell us about the air ride. Is it a big improvement?

I am not sure about the airride, I am guessing that it helps out, I never hardly drove this truck before I have done what is done. I have only put about 50 or 60 miles on it so far to the place where I had the gatorhyde sprayed on the bed. That trip the front seemed a little stiff, but the 400 gallon fuel tank was empty. I know what your saying about the brownie box, I had that in my mind maybe to put on next year, I will just have to see how it is, I figure crusing speed will be right about 60-65 or so for a good RPM and I can get 70 if I have to pass someone. I have 8. 25-20 tires on there so probably a little taller than 7. 50. I have 50 weight oil in the trans a quart over full, the same oil used in Semi transmissions. I also put a temp gauge in the trans to see how hot it is going to run. Thanks for the input.
