Cummins at equipment auctions.

overhaulin' does a CNN H1

Am I reading this right? It looks like this company, ChinaHanJi, has knocked off copies of the Bosch VP44. Hmmmm! I wonder if Bosch sold the rights to china as they're no longer interested in such ancient technology!

If you got that information in an email, it's most likely a scam. I got one with the same information quite a while ago.

IF Bosch is like Cummins, they have contract manufacturers making authorized parts all around the globe - caution is always a good policy, but that may well be a legitimate Bosch authorized manufacturer...

The company looks legit. I was just a little surprised to find the VP44 being made in China (not even sure why that should be surprising).

I was doing a search on diesel trucks using the VP44 and found an Izusu delivery type truck with a smaller diesel motor and VP pump. The engine put out around 120 HP which made me think this was probably the correct application for that pump. Our 200 plus HP Cummins is more than likely pushing the envelope for long term reliability.

Shame on you, Mike! Go wash your mouth out with soap! Believe me, your Cummins will last longer than the Dodge it's wrapped in.

I beleive you! It's just that damn injection pump that keeps me up at night.

The fuel system is now modified enough that I should stop worrying about the VP. Once you've had one go on you though. . you get a little gun-shy. Still find myself staring at the fuel gauge waiting for something bad to happen.

You know Mike, it's hard to argue against VP-44 worries I suppose - but I got 4 years and 45K or so miles out of my original, and even then, it was only that derned brass advance cylinder that failed early - as Bosch, DC and various pump rebuilders knew it would.

The rest of the internals were perfect - or at least good enough that II simply reinstalled everything back into a new case and returned it to me...

For all intents and purposes, I would still essentially be running on the "original" pump, if I hadn't instead installed my backup II reconditioned spare I already had on hand. As much as I too dislike the relative uncertainty involved in traveling with the shaky VP-44's, the relative cost for me at least, has been about $250 per year.

Putting it into perspective, it's ALSO cost me about $250 a year for TIRES, too, and no one blinks an eye about that... :-laf

NO, not great - but you know, the REST of the truck is so DERNED excellent, I'll just live with this single known weakness, and trust that the several bandaids I use to prop up the pump will allow continued operation of the truck that is at least no WORSE than what it has been - and hopefully better!

This '02, with the various mods I have done to it, as an absolute JOY to drive, either empty or RV towing - tight, comfortable and extra power to burn - as well as economy that's really hard to beat.

I was thinking as we returned home from our trip down to California after Thanksgiving with all our kids and grandkids - in spite of the VP-44 issues for trucks like mine, if I was offered ANY new Dodge of my choice, setup with ANY combination of options in an even trade for mine, I'd turn it down!

I like my truck that much - and have NO regrets over choosing to buy it when I did, rather than wait for one of the later trucks - VP-44 issues, or not!

Well. . to be fair, I got 70K out of mine and it was still running reasonably well. A little surging when cold and the occasionaly limp mode or smoke. I drove it for 6 months with a 0216 code. So the engine never did let me down.

Given the work you and Bob Weis have done on cooling the VP and others have done (Glacier, Vulcan, etc) with LP's, lines. . one would think this VP thing is behind us. If the pump will last for 150K miles or so with these mods. . I'll take it. That's normal wear and tear.

Now. . if only these Chinese VP44 pumps were going for $500. 00 bucks... ...

I've seen on TV that a lot of Chinese companies will make knock-offs for almost everything. There's little to no patent enforcement over there so they just copy away. Don't know if that's the case here or not, but I wouldn't be surprised.

That's the same VP pump used is most ag and construction applications called a VP30.

I saw the VP30 but there is also a VP44. If you scroll down a little further you'll see the P-pumps (P-7100, etc). It looks like they make most of what Bosch has.

Mike

they sell P-pumps, injectors, delivery valves, turbos of all brands including HX40W's i wonder if its worth looking into

What I'd love to see more than a cheaper VP-44 Asian knock-off, is an IMPROVED and REVISED version that was more durable than the OEM Bosch units, but include full interchangeability and versatility of the OEM unit - even if I had to pay significantly MORE for it!

I love the versatility and technology of the OEM VP-44 - it's only the unreliability I dislike... ;)

I was working in China this last summer and was not impressed with there craftmenship or percision tools so I would be very leary about buying anything that needs a high tolerance coming from China.

Chinese VP44

the website does not offer pricing. I asked for a price and they responded that they are unable to produce the complete units yet. I left it at that.
