Ok here's the deal, I had to take my chip out for a injector pump replacement shortly before I had to make a trip to Utah. I made the trip to Utah (without the chip) and notice the infamous diesel rattle was louder than normal. It almost sounded like the valves. I got back a couple days ago, re-installed the chip and the engine actually seemed like it ran better with the chip installed. In addition to my injector pump being replaced, the dealer overfilled my oil with regular oil and I'm running synthetic. I'm not sure if the rattle is normal or not. Any thoughts?

Do you mean that the dealer mixed regular oil in with you synthetic?? That would be a bad thing, as those two substances don't mix. If that is the case I would drain immediately and refill (hopefully at dealer expense). Overfill will cause other problems as well. I would tend to it asap.

How much did he OVERFILL it. Like just a qt shouldnt make any diff. in noise. If he drained oil ,changed filter etc, then going to the dino oil shouldnt hurt eather. Just go back to what you want next change.

I'm going to run some AMSOIL engine flush through it tonight then change the oil and filter. I will make of up for the lack of dealer detail and fill the oil to the correct level. I'll let you guys know how it turns out.

If you look at Amsoil literature, they say you can mix dino and their synthetic no problem. You won't get all the benefits of straight synthetic, but its not like the combo turns into an abrasive blob of precipitate in the oil pan. Besides there are half synthetic oils offered by the a couple of the motor oil companies.

I too would probably drain the sucker and refill with your usual synthetic, but I sure as hell wouldn't flush the system or freak out about it, not that big of a deal.

that is true, read the back of the synthetic bottle, and it will say if it is compatable with conventional or hydrocracked oils... . ;)

Here's an update. I ran some engine flush through the engine, then changed the oil and filter. While changing the oil I noticed a connector up near the front disconnected. It's the same connector that my injector pump was leaking on and running down. The dealer that changed my pump must have forgotten to reconnect it. I called the dealer and was told that connector goes to the lift pump. I drove at least 500 miles with just the injector pump working. Pretty messed up if you ask me. The truck seems to run better now and my gas milage is back up. I haven't checked for codes yet but I will.

Maybe you need to look for a new dealer that pays a little more attention

Good luck with that  I was installing my boost/egt gauge and found a couple of "stupids" left from the installation of my Jake at the dealer. There was the vacuum line from the pump to the actuator that was twisted and kinked, can't believe it even worked. The other was the lower clamp that the bonehead positioned behind the vacuum can and pinned up to the firewall so it took 1/2 an hour to remove. Once I repositioned it, it is now a five minute job to remove. Reminded me of why all regular service is done at my house ;)

I've worked in a couple shops and some are worse than others, but it all boils down to TIME.

One place I worked at was real bad about it if you went over what Alldata said it should take... . of course it doesn't factor in stripped/broken bolts, looking for the right tool, waiting on parts, etc.

So, it's easy to overlook simple things when your rushing. I've done a few stupid things, like have 4 or 5 cars I'm working on at the same time. Waiting on oil filter for 1 of the cars... forget about it, fill it up and make a big mess when I fire it up. It makes it worse when the boss is breathing down my back... what's taking so long... is it done yet... this was supposed to be done an hour ago. :-{}

I was very ****** when I trusted a reputable transmission shop to do the work on my truck (lost 2nd gear). It worked great... a bit down the road I decide to change the oil and filter, to make sure there's nothing in there from the rebuild.

Well 3 bolts for the pan are stripped. So I bring it back, and the fix it... yeah haha. I get home and there's ATF all over the place. Well the fixed the 3 that were stripped, and then stripped out 7 or 8 more! I fixed it myself with heli-coils, which is what I should have done in the first place... It gets me that I had a perfectly fine case when I started, and now it's cobbled together.

AAAAAAAAAAAAMEN NATE. This is the thing that most dont understand. The pressure on the "Regular old mechanic" is so great, that they dont "PAY" the mechanic for doing a Good & thorough job. They "pay" for the "half as#" Job!!!!. If It is going to be done perfect, it takes time. Nobody can shortcut that!!!

My brother also worked in a shop for a few years during high school/college as one of his jobs.

He was telling me he could never go back to working on cars all day just because it was always rush rush rush and your expected to do quality work. He is a machinist now and they do have deadlines, but it's alot slower paced.

Where he worked it was really bad. He was "allotted" 15 mins a car to do oil changes, 20 or 25 for all 4 tires replaced... that means getting the car, putting in on the hoist, doing the work, and having it parked outside. Troubleshooting has to be the worst. When you have to explain to the boss why it took you 3 hrs to figure a certain thing out... and of course mr boss man would of had it done in 1 hr... blah blah blah. :D

I'm an aircraft quality assurance inspector in the air force and I should have known better than to just trust the work that was done on my truck. The really sad thing is that I now have two dealers on my black list. The nearest dealer that hasn't screwed up my truck yet is an hour away.

By the way, doesn't anyone know what the 0480 and 0483 codes are and if they are terminal or not. I'm assuming they were tripped because the plug was disconnected but just want to make sure. I don't have any engine light because of them. Thanks!

I realize that there is always pressure to do the job faster and faster but where I work--come backs don't pay anything. And you usually lose a customer. :( Saw a great bumper sticker the other day--I love my job and I love my boss---I'm self employed!!!
