my buddy has an 05 truck with a stock charger, we put a cold air intake on it last nite and two different blades on the compressor wheel have small chips missing on the very edge, is this bad? it has had to have been this way for a long time, there is some play in the shaft but not extreme... any thoughts

Alarms should be going off everywhere. The chipped vanes most likely indicate foreign object ingestion. There is no telling if the turbo has been compromised without having a dye penetrant test done to check for cracking. These turbo's spin well above 100K and if one self destructs due to a pre-existing crack or defect, the collateral damage could be significant.

I'd remove the turbo and have it checked!

were they actual chips off the blade, or was the edge machined smooth. .

without pictures it is hard to say, but if they are actual chips, that isn't good.
