First: I Have A 03 Ram Diesel... i Have 25k Miles And The Regular Warranty Is Out In Oct 06 Or 36,000 Miles Which Ever Comes First... got A Post Card From Chrysir Today Wanting To Sell Me A Protection Policy... . those Of You That Have This Policy, 1. Is It Worth The Cost??? 2. Does The Policy Pay Off Good? 3. . What Does This Policy Cost???? 4. Is There Deductables??? 5..... any Other Advice Would Be Appreciated... . 6. . Oh Yes, Should I Wait Till The Warranty Is All Most Over Before Purchasing This Policy???? Thanks... ... . doc.....

No plan is worth the cost unless you have a repair that exceeds what you paid for the plan. It's basically a bet... the policy maker is betting you that nothing will go wrong vs your bet that something will. Having said that, I always get a factory plan when I buy new. They did indeed pay for themselves for my 90 and 93 Fords, and 96 Ram. As mentioned above, you can shop around to any Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep dealer to get a competitive price for the factory plan.

DO NOT get a third-party/aftermarket plan just to save a few bucks. These companies are in it for the money only and will deny every claim they can. (They have also been dropping like flies the last few years, leaving "customers" with a worthless piece of paper, no coverage, and no refund. ) In contrast, it's in DC's best interest to approve claims because a satisfied customer will buy another vehicle, and that is where they make THEIR money.

I have an 02 Dodge Ram and I purchased the Best Extended warranty that Dodge had to offer. I am about 1000 miles before I reach the 100K limit of the contract.

To date Dodge has replaced under warranty 1) 2-Injection Pumps 2) 3 -Lift Pumps... incl new transfer pump in fuel tank 3)Auto door locks 4) Re-built the Rear Differential with all new parts.

I normally don't purchase extended warranties but I think, with cars/trucks becoming more complex than ever, that I made the right decision and got my $$$ worth. On the flip side, IF I had No problems, I still would have thought I made the right decision because I would have bought one heck of a truck.

Radar Doc, Look at it this way, its basically a gamble, just like KC said. Anytime you purchase a TV,Refridge, appliance, etc etc, they try to sell you an extended warrenty. Now, what you have to realise is that they have your money up front and you have nothing to show for it, but a piece of paper that in a certain time frame will become worthless. (This might be a good way to make a killing; excuse me, I ment to say. . a living!)

Now RD, I don,t know how much they're asking, money wise for this xtended warrenty, but for the sake of this conversation lets just say its $2000. 00

Instead of giving them the two grand, I'll bet if you put a little effort into it, you might find a decent investment. . (I Bonds???) to put that two grand to work for you, while your still driving your truck arround.

Now lets say you get real lucky, and your Dodge Ram CTD doesn't puke up a major repair bill for at least a couple of years. Guess what my friend? you still got your two grand. . PLUS whatever return you earned on it. Why it might even be able to start a college fund for your kid! (mind you, I said START a college fund, I realize whe're talking Mega-bucks here... and no I didn't say Mega Cab).

Now, lets say you get unlucky, its as simple as you lose the bet. Of course this depends on how big the repair bill is.

My conclusion; take good care of your truck, don't abuse it, and you keep the money in your pocket. Good luck. . I hope this helps you make a good decision. gathomas

no one has said a thing about what these programs cost??? you guys that have bought the plan,,, what did you have to pay for it????????? tks to all of you for your say... ... ... DOC... ... .

I have been getting stuff in the mail telling me my 2002 warrantee is about to expire. I think Dodge sold my address because I really don't think the mail I am getting is from Dodge. (but it might be, I don't read it that close before throwing it out).

I bought my '03 on 7-29-03. I bought a 100,000 mile, bumper-to-bumper, $50. 00 deductible Chrysler-Dodge service contract on 1-6-04 when I had approx 11,950 miles on the truck. The cost at that time was $1,810. 00. I purchased the truck from Chapprell Dodge in Ada, OK and I purchased the service contract from them also. (The business manager's name is Rick Manning, and he's very straight-forward. ) I just turned 37,250 miles on the truck today, and have had no opportunity to use the service contract. On the other hand, Dodge Customer Service (corporate) just agreed to replace my Mopar "hands-free cell-phone unit" at no charge to me, notwithstanding that I had 37,000 miles on the truck and the warranty on that part ran out at 36,000 miles. Dodge could have insisted that I replace it under the service contract, which with the $50. 00 deductible would have cost me about $15. 00. In fact the corporate rep bought up the fact that I had purchased the service contract, right before he agreed to replace the unit for free. However, I don't know if this attitude will carry over to replacing something big for free, like the A/C, or the radiator, or the engine, rather than making me use the service contract.

I subscribe to Consumer Reports, which says that ALL service contracts are a bad investment -- they essentially are an insurance policy which will pay to repair things that usually (statistically) don't break very often, so the odds of NOT needing the service contract are in the vehicle owner's favor. On the other hand, I was 60 when I purchased the truck. I used to do ALL of our vehicle maintenance, and spent as little as I could at repair shops. But gradually each new (to us) vehicle had more and more "stuff" that I didn't understand, and which was not explained very clearly in any of the shop manuals. I decided that if I was going to keep this new (REALLY NEW!) truck for about 10 years (which I usually do, and more), I didn't want to be lying in the driveway at 10:00 PM underneath a truck at age 68 the night before a big trip (that had been the usual M. O. over the past 25 years or so... ).

BTW, I recently purchased an "oil-change-and-lube" coupon book from Dodge,

also through Chapprell Dodge. I bought the maximum amount of oil changes (25, I think). Each oil change, lube, oil, filters and associated parts will cost me approximately $17. 75 (total) during the life of the coupon book.

Not Dodge related but I'm sure they all play the same game!

I bought a Toyota RAV4 3 years ago. It was a 2001 year, bought it "certified" which supposedly guarantee's it was never wrecked. I bought the extended warrantee which was 100,000 miles and 6 years for about $1900. I traded the vehicle last month (for a Jeep Liberty CRD) and did the paperwork for the cancellation of the extended warranty. Ok, I paid exactly 1/2 the payments on the 6 year loan and the vehicle had 50,000 miles on trade. They are sending me 25% of the original value back. WOW wait a minute, 1/2 of the 6 years and 1/2 of the mileage, what gives here. Well come to find out it EXTENDS the original warranty soooooooooooooooooo it is from the ORIGINAL SALE of the vehicle (yes I bought it used and my contract began when the original owner bought the car). So being a 2001 vehicle we are in the 5th year and 1/2 of the mileage.

DON'T EVER BUY AN EXTENDED WARRANTY!!!!!!!

THEY ARE CROOKS AND IF YOU DO BUY IT READ THE FINE PRINT CAREFULLY!

Lets just say for argument sake... ... ..... that an injection pump goes for 2500 and a lift pump goes for 450 how much did chazj save by having the contract... ... also assuming of coarse that some of those repairs were past his Cummins engine coverage... ... ... ... . :-laf

OK, all I can tell you is I have the top of the line warrenty and the oil change book. In fact I sold it to myself. I was the the business manager at Layton Hills Dodge before going to work for the goverment. The policy I have even gives me a rental for free when I take my truck in for a oil change. I want you to call the guy that is there now his name is Pete, he's a good guy! Only talk to Pete! 801-546-2456 and tell him Big Sarge sent you.

NEVER GET anything but a Manufactures extended warrenty, even if you buy on from a used car lot, go to a New Dealer and get it if you want it. I sold the others and I would never sell one if I had a choice! And remember, cheaper is not better.

I hope you call Pete and get it. I also help you never need it! But if you do, you'll never regret it!

I think the oil change book is a great deal. You can't chnge it yourself for that! I had a dealership in St. Louis up in Florrisant try to charge me 100 bucks for a oil change! WHAT A RIP. Oil change contract took care of that! I have the paper work to prove it on that!

But you can't purchase a service contract that extends beyond the engine warranty. The longest contract DC sells is a 100K contract. That's not 100K from the purchase of the contract - that's 100K on the odometer (so it doesn't matter if you buy the contract at the time of purchase, half-way through the warranty period, or at 35,999 miles).

Now - with that said, I did purchase a CSC when I bought my truck - mainly because of all the electronics (stuff I couldn't fix myself). I haven't had to use it yet, but the piece of mind alone was worth it to me. It was about $1700. Over the life of the contract (I'll hit 100K at about the 5 year mark), that's $28 a month. Not a huge pricetag...

get the extended warranty!!!!!!!

its like driving a company truck, except im sure you will take much better care of it.

in my opinnion they always pay for itself.

The 2 Injection pumps would have been covered under the 100K warrantee on the engine.

the 3 lift pumps including the new transfer pump in fuel tank could have been under the Emissions warrantee or maybe the 100K engine warrantee or Factory 7-70 power train warrantee.

The Rear would have been under the 7-70 powertrain

Now the auto door locks would have been covered by the extended warrantee.

remember for 2006 you do not get the 7/70 power train anymore, you get the 3/36 and the cummins motor 100,000 mile. So I am thinking about getting the extended warrenty on mine. 2000 bucks can buy a lot of cool stuff for a new truck.

Until Jan 2 you can get that Freedom plan which includes a 6 year 60K warrantee.

If my truck comes in between now and then I might go for that plan instead of the rebate. If you got the cash to pay up front, the $2388 Visa card they give you on top of the 2 year maint and extended warrantee is worth it.

I have had several new trucks from different brands and it is such a pain in the butt to get the dealers to even work on your truck under warranty that I quit buying the extended warranties. How many times did I hear, its normal, cant reproduce customer concern, etc. I had a service manager tell me that a severe brake pulse at 9000 miles was "normal" and they refused warranty coverage. This is one relationship I dont want to "extend".

Fellows, we've kind of hijacked Radar Doctor's thread. Want he wants to know is HOW MUCH $ did you pay for your service contract/extended warranty?
