Cincinnati, OH to Avon, CT - Best Route?

What's the best route to get from Cincinnati, OH to Avon (near Hartford) CT? Mapquest says to take I-71 up to Akron then I-80 through PA to I-81 to I-84 but Google maps says take I-70 into PA to I-81 to I-78 then I-287 North to I-87 to I-84. I'm hauling 3 cars with a gross weight of about 25,800 lbs. so I'm wondering which route is gonna be less severe as far as climbing the mountains and also have less open weight stations. I have been from OH to NY through PA on I-80 before and there are few weight stations but climbing those hills is no fun. On the map it looks like the I-70/I-78 route might be less climbing. Both routes are very close on total mileage.



Anybody have any thoughts on it?

i would probably take 80 across myself. i have been through that way. i dont know how the 70 route would be. when are you leaving?

This is my preferred route. when I head out west. The section going north on I-81 has some good climbs to it as well as some lesser hills on I-84. But no real traffic issues. Only toll is by Newburgh, NY. Less expensive than the Tappen Zee (off I-87)

Take this route if you don't mind dealing with traffic. The Jersey area (I-287) has alot of traffic. It also doesn't make sense to take 287 to 87 north to I-84. I usually get on I-87 south towards I-95 (avoid) or 684 north to 84. I would not ake the Google route. Also their are more tolls. Tappan zee bridge over the Hudson is trafficy and more expensive than Newburgh bridge just north of it.

I-70 to I-78 has some less climbing but more traffic when you get to 287. I believe that I-70 also has some climbing in the central part of Penn.



Just for haha's I plugged your route into my map program (Rand Mcnally Streets & Trips 2005) I changed alot of options to see what would come up. I-80 came up almost every time. When I avoided I-80 it told me to take I-90 Through Upstate New York to the Mass pike then Down I-91. It seems it didn't want me to take I-70. Also I-70 is a Toll road through Penn.

Dan I would say go the 81 84 route. Even though you'd be coming about 10 minutes from my house, there's nothing good this way except tolls and traffic!!!
