That Ice technique is pretty cool. Never heard of that one before.

I'm not sure what your technique is for using your tanks. I cannot count how many times I have run across people in RV parks that leave there BlackWater valves open when they arrive. Big no, no. This allows the solids to pile up in the bottom creating a thick sludge that is so hard to get out it is almost impossible.

Leaving the BlackWater valve shut until it is time to "let it loose" is a better idea and will give you less problems down the road. Funny no one mentioned this. But is the most important thing.

If you are fairly sure your tank is not full of solids it is safe to flush your tank out with bleach about once every six months or once a year to really clean the toilet and down and around the inside of that nasty pipe (inside the camper). Just be sure to flush it at least 3 times to get all the bleach out. This will kill all the enzymes. So, you will be "starting over".

We use that cheap orange stuff from WalMart. Never had any problems.

Also, be sure to use the right toilet paper and use it in moderation. Just about every store around carries Scott. Just be sure it is safe for septic systems and or RV's and it not super thick.

We are full timers... .

I didn't read all the posts... . but after 20 years of RV use... heck maybe 30 now... here's what I've learned.....

We empty the tank on the way out of the park... . and flush it with clear water...

I than put in 15 gals of water... . 2 cups of powdered TIDE from the washing machine... and let it run for 200 miles or so... sometimes we use it, sometimes we don't... before we started this... . we'd have all kinds of smells... . now its always nice and clean... .

We just left the coast... . the hose was running nice and clear... . I did the above fix... and later in the day... 50 miles from home I stopped and dumped it again... . you can't believe what came out... and it was clean 2 or 3 weeks ago... . caked and packed in there.....

We also charge the tank on the way out of town the same way... . 15 gal water, 2 cups of Tide..... and let it slosh until the first dump... . works for us... .

Hope this helps...

I do the same, but I only put about 5 gallons in the tank. l don't have an accessable drain at home so the 5 gallons is still managable.
