That Ice technique is pretty cool. Never heard of that one before.
I'm not sure what your technique is for using your tanks. I cannot count how many times I have run across people in RV parks that leave there BlackWater valves open when they arrive. Big no, no. This allows the solids to pile up in the bottom creating a thick sludge that is so hard to get out it is almost impossible.
Leaving the BlackWater valve shut until it is time to "let it loose" is a better idea and will give you less problems down the road. Funny no one mentioned this. But is the most important thing.
If you are fairly sure your tank is not full of solids it is safe to flush your tank out with bleach about once every six months or once a year to really clean the toilet and down and around the inside of that nasty pipe (inside the camper). Just be sure to flush it at least 3 times to get all the bleach out. This will kill all the enzymes. So, you will be "starting over".
We use that cheap orange stuff from WalMart. Never had any problems.
Also, be sure to use the right toilet paper and use it in moderation. Just about every store around carries Scott. Just be sure it is safe for septic systems and or RV's and it not super thick.
We are full timers... .
