Edge EZ on Level three (3)

When I decided to install a new Mag-Hytec Diff Cover, it acured to me that the cover may hit the spare tire. When checking with other TDR members this was confirmed. It is my understanding the cover just rubs a little on the stock tire. This was not acceptable to me! Some told me to let the tire down from the cradle a little, just enough to allow you to pull it back while cranking it back up. I tried this but the tire would slide back some. I think I have come up with a solution; I shifted the tire back on the cradle, to where it is just sitting on the edge of the creadle. If you notice the cradle has two levels to it (I don't know how else to describe this). The way I positioned the cradle, on one side the tire is resting on the lower level, on the front of the cradle it is positioned on the second level. I drilled a 1/8 inch hole in the back of cradle in order to slide a heavy plastic tie through there to insure that the tire would not shift. Like I said earlier the cradle is just holding on to the tire by about a 1/4 inch. In the front it has lots of meat holding it! This has now given me an extra 3/4 of an inch.

I need to take a picture! That might make this make more sense.

i actually saw the same problem but the solution i came up with was to use the theft cable and wrap it around the receiver hitch and lock it on it took a little bit to get it positioned just right but it hasnt moved yet after about 10k just another ideal

I thought of that to. It just is so hard to get the thing to stay put when you are cranking it up. The way I did it, it stays put with no fuss. We put the cover on to day, and had lots of room to work in.

Not setting the tire properly on the cradle is asking for trouble. I had the tire guys reinstall the spare after a flat and lock the cable lock. Well they had it off center and at about 75mph the tire came loose the cable lock held it for a second then the truck was lifted in the back and my father ( who was following at the time) said that tire flew about 50-70 feet in the air and landed about 50 yards away and rolled another 1/2 mile. :--)

I have the Mag Hytec and the oversize stock tires on my truck and the spare fits properly with about 1/4 inch space. Granted spare had to be lowered to install cover but with drain hole I should not have to touch the spare for anything but flats.

I think the guy must have missed the cradle all together! That is why I watch this operation when ever someone else does this. I don't believe the tire mod I have done will allow the tire to go anywhere. But just to make sure, that is why I drilled the hole in the cradle and put in a plastic tie. I have lifted my weight up holding the tire and it does even budge!

I used a nylon tie down strap, like you would use for a motorcycle... loosened the cradle a little, cinched it up tight to the spare rim and one of the bumper supports, then tightened the cradle back up... . 20,000 miles later and no problems.

Nope could not have missed the cradle as the cable lock was long enough for tire to hit ground. I have put tire up before and had it on partially and when I tightened it up the cradle popped all the eay loose.

A zip tie will be easily cut by the metal.

That make no sense! If the cradle is up and tight, there is no way that tire is going to come down, centered or not. Like I said, I pulled myself up holding the tire and that thing did not move. I think you have some other problem with you cradle. The zip tie you just to keep in from shifting, if there were to happen, which I doubt it will. With the lock I have the tire does not touch the ground, I tried it.
