Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Opinions Wanted

I am having a strange prob in my '95 2500 5spd. When starting, I hold the clutch down and the starter engages only momentarily, then stops. I invariably have to push the clutch down farther and try again. Usually it starts the second time. As time has gone by, it seems that I have to push the clutch down farther and farther (on the second try), to get the truck to start. I see that the switch is an integral part of the master cyl and I'm not looking forward to replacinge the whole *&$#* thing. The clutch operation/ height has not seemed to change, just the response of the switch. . !? Is there an adjustment? is the jerking of the starter/ engine causing the switch to disengage? What's going on? Motor mounts worn out? and the starting engaging jerking the engine assembly? (Just guessing). . Anybody else had this prob?. . Thanks. . JohnG

Clutch Safety

Your clutch is starting to wear. You don't notice it when driving but you have to push clutch in further do engege the safety switch.

The safety switch is part of the clutch slave assembly, but can not be replaced as an individual piece. It won't do any good to replace the slave assembly, because a new clutch disk is the fix. BUT is is simple to bypass the safety, just take a two wire skotch lock connector and clamp it across both wires from the switch and it will start with out a problem. Just keep in mind, if you DON'T push the clutch in, it will STILL start -- THERE WILL BE NO SAFETY AT ALL. -- I had this happen on both my '94 and '99 and until I replaced the slave cylinder assembly on the '99 I had no safety. I got another year out of the clutch with the safety bypassed and no problem.

This is a 30 cent fix - - the free fix is to bare the two wires and twist them together and tape them!

REPEAT AFTER ME - - "I AM RESPONSIBLE FOR MY OWN ACTIONS AND SAFETY"

Good Luck!

Denny,

Just a minor correction to what you said. The safty switch is part of the master cylinder, the slave cylinder is mounted on the bellhousing. The procedure you said is the way around the switch so that you do not have to have the clutch peddle depressed to start. I did the bypass by unpluging the switch and then making a jumper to connect the two wires. I've gotten into the habit of shaking the gear shift lever before turning the key to make sure it is in netrual.

... and you can jump the safety switch with a momentary contact SPST switch, mounted in an obscure position, to prevent the starter from engaging with only a key-turn. This new switch, which will need to be closed when you wish to engage the starter, provides another layer of security for your truck.

I kinda had a feeling that the clutch might be wearing out. I think it's the orig. w 100,000m, but that doesn't answer why at first attempt, the starter engages momentarily, (with the clutch depressed far enough to engage the switch), then kicks off until I push the clutch down farther. . ? Any clues why this happens? JohnG
