Having to push REAL hard last 30 days on my clutch to get 2004. 5 4x4 NV5600 manual transmission truck to start. Yesterday it would not start until truck cooled down. This morning it was 60 deg and started just fine. Thinking I need to replace the $66 switch?

Is the replacement very difficult. :)

I just bypassed mine from new. I don't like the idea of having the pressure of a depressed clutch against the dry thrust bearing on first start-up.

I'm having a dilema equating your will not start until cooled down statement to the saftey start switch statement?

The switch wraps around the pushrod, the light colored plate releases with a two prong keeper. The trickier part is seeing the doohickey that releases the thing-a-m-gig on the wire harness.

Does it even try to crank, make noise at all?

Yesterday when it was hot it would not start until it cooled down for about 45 minutes.
At the gas station when it would not start-when I turned the key nothing happened. All the electrical worked fine, but it would not start for about 45 minutes. Like I said this morning it cold started like normal.

Can you check for power to the solenoid from your START circuit? If you get power from the circuit to the solenoid then the start switch circuit shoud be OK.

If you have a no start condition, try having someone tap the starter with a broom handle or something while you try to crank it. If it bites at all, might need starter solenoid contacts. Geno's has a kit.

I still don't see the heat connection to the saftey switch, it is not exposed to much heat in the cab.

I would bypass it to verify. Bypass it with a switch and you can choose when you want to use the clutch or not.

I know this might sound mickey mouse but you can temporarily bypass the clutch switch with a paper clip that has been broken in two halves. You stick one leg of the paperclip into each part of the plug where the wires come out. It just completes the safety circuit.
I agree about the starter acting up if this doesn't work.

Installed new switch and vehicle starts when warmed up.
I checked with the Dodge dealer and the mechanic indicated he had not en counted this problem - starts when cold but will not start when warmed up.
thanks for the help

So you start in N with clutch pedal out? Not sure of your bearing concern. Is there some different setup on these? I thought they're always dry.

I was taught to always have the transmission in neutral and the clutch depressed for safety and to decrease the load on the starter. That being said, bypassing that switch eliminates a rare malfunction that could leave you stranded. Toyota included a bypass switch on some of their manual gassers, that would allow you to push start it in the event of a starter failure. The government has probably forced them to discontinue that feature. Too practical.

The "Clutch Start Cancel" switch actually had nothing to do with starter failure, and rig will compression start with the clutch out, as the clutch safety switch is for starter engagement only. The switch was actually to allow you to start the truck in gear if you were on a hill too steep to start and slip the clutch. I used my CSC switch a couple times in that manner and it was awesome! Start in 4L 1st and once the motor catches release the starter and drive off.

I put a CSC switch in a Ford of mine, and plan to do it on my Dodge as well. It's also real handy for starting the truck without climbing in, especially when dirty from working on it. Just make sure its in N.

Well after this last elk season I am really wanting to get my own "clutch start cancel" installed, such a handy switch.
