I had lift pump problems again three weeks ago now I've had a few spurts of flat pedal and the 216 code had the computer reset on thursday and code was back friday. I have installed gauges and a dodge engine brake. is the dealer going to give me a concern over these additions to my truck? I am going to call the dealer on monday to make an appointment.

This is off topic, sorry. How do you like your exhaust brake? Is it an incredible decceleration in speed or just a modest braking force. Just looking for some feedback. Thanks Clay

The Dodge dealer can not legally say anything about an exhaust brake or anything else for that matter not directly related to the VP.

Basically the law says that if the aftermarket modification was not responsible for on its own or on some large part the cause of the damages they CAN NOT deny you warranty work. And since the exhaust has no bearing on how the VP works, they're stuck with the bill.

I went through this with my DC dealer, pieces of ***** they are, and I won.

Thanks R J I have not called the dealer yet, Im dreading the appointment the drop off pick up the phone calls the waiting game the 20 questions etc etc.

But I guess i will start the summer is only half over and I have alot of camping trips into the woods planned and a broken truck in the state of maine is not a good idea.

Soooo I call the dealer to make an appointment I give them the code and they say " Thats an insignificant code its not in our computer"

Appointment is a week from wednesday I need to drop it off and leave it :(

Well, they're full of it.

The p0216 code is ALL THEY NEED to make a claim with Cummins.

Cummins doesn't like paying for these so they usually take their sweet time, dealership calls them and tries to make a claim, Cummins tells them to do all these different tests, dealer does them and calls back, Cummins tells them to do more stuff, they do it... finally Cummins accepts the claim and it takes a few days to ship the part considering the dealership doesn't have one in stock... so on and so forth. Once the part is there it takes them about 6 hours to install (slow and lazy as they usually are).

Just a real pain, if you can, call a few different DC dealers in your area and ask them what they're schedule is, the sooner you get it in there, the sooner they'll be done.

I don't think Dodge calls Cummins about any codes. Cummins sells these motors to Dodge *without* a warranty from Cummins. Dodge provides the warranty.

That being said, as I am one of the folks that have had a VP44 replaced under warranty, it really depends on your dealer. I did not have any problems getting it done. Went in with the P0216 code, and it was replaced *that same day*!!! At one time, they had to call STAR to get authorization and I believe that is still true. But there is *no* requirement to call Cummins.

If you have tapped the pump wire, you're on your own. Otherwise, find a good service department and they will replace the pump.

Say this:

Tell the dealer that you had a dead pedal, almost got hit on the freeway because the truck wouldn't accelerate or hold speed. Then you had the 0216 code show up. Tell them you had to pull of the road and shut off the truck to get it to run above an idle. Then you had the dead pedal again, and had to repeat the shut-off and restart to get the truck moving again.

The 0216 code is injection pump timing failure. It means the VP has gone bad. It IS significant. AND it is dangerous!!

If they give you any BS ask them to call the STAR hotline and ak if having a dead pedal and a 0216 code does or does not prove the pump is bad and validate a warrantee replacement of the VP.

If they say no, go to another dealer, They are incompetent. I have a good dealer nearby me and they have replaced several of my customers's VP's based on the above facts and statements by the truck owners.

Hope this helps. Greg L
