I did a search on code scanners and readers and found a couple of threads that gave a little useful information. My MIL (malfunction indicator lamp) is lit and I want to find a reasonably priced scanner that can read and clear the code/s. I see some people are using Smarty programmer ($685), Actron CP9135 ($335), AutoEnginuity (laptop based w/ performance tests $210), Nology (laptop based w/ performance test $370).
I hate going to dealers and getting hosed.
I have never used a scanner before. Can some one give me some guidance on what to look for in a reader. I under stand that I need an OBD2 reader that supports CAN protocol. What are you using to scan and clear your codes? What scanners should I stay away from? What do you like about your reader? Where can I find out what the code means? Is that published in the D/C shop manual?
Well I just had an epiphany and it paid off. This morning I checked the oil, transmission, and coolant levels. As I was composing this thread it dawned on me I did not drain the water out of the fuel. I drained the fuel, started the truck and the code cleared. Woo Hoo! I am still interested in a code reader and will appreciate any advice i get.
Thank you Richard
