Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Fuel Leak Concern...

About 6 months ago, My truck lost throttle response at around 58 mph in OD. No speed loss or gain when I pressed the peddle. This event would only do it once in a while at first only in OD at around the same speed. After a couple of months it would periodically do it at different speeds when not in OD. I would check the LP pressure at the schraider valve (next to the VP 44). I would get OK numbers (14 at idle, 11 at cruise, and 7 at WOT).

I checked my codes and got the 0216 and a couple of others. I took my truck to the dealer and had them check it out. The service writer said the truck did not have any codes, but recommended a filter change. I asked about the codes on the odometer and was told those are for something else. I changed the filter and the problem would still come up.

A couple of times I would start it up and it would not sound like the typical Cummins sound (sorta like a gasser-whoosing air-white smoke-rough running). I would take off and it would not have any power and I would have to turn it off and then it would sound and run fine after startup.

I was then told by a diesel injection service that the best CTD tech in my area was at a particular dealer. So I take it in and tell the service writer the history and the problems. The tech drives it and says "could not duplicate the problem". I was able to talk to the tech and he said that the codes I get are (you guessed it) for "something else". The tech says that the codes he looks for are 2 digit codes.

I have changed the filter again, checked the pressure again, I get my fuel from a high volume retailer. I pull a loaded trailer to Gainesville on the weekends and do not want the truck to die when towing.

I want to upgrade my fuel system, but do not want to do it now because of possible warranty issues.

I have 56K on the truck.

What I do not understand is the tech saying the code I see is for something else.

Anybody around Northeast Florida that knows an honest dealer?

I have never had a "box" attached to the engine.

I don't have a clue either, unless he is refering to Cummins.

ECM is Cummins.

I don't know who makes the PCM.

this is crazy....

IMO, you have the classic dying VP44 symptoms, and 0216 INJECTION PUMP TIMING FAILURE code to back it up. Note to "tech"... . this is a FOUR digit code, and what part of the words IPTF don't you understand? Yeah, I meant to be shouting, not at you, but at the stupidity of this.

These people are idiots... "for something else"... . "two digit codes". .

(I rarely use these smilie thingies, but this is beyond belief)

I'd go to Cummins and have someone who knows how to use a scanner help you. I wouldn't let either of these idiot dealers touch your truck again, especially to install the new VP I think you're gonna need.

Do a search here on the 0216... . go back and look at some of my posts between April and July, etc. CFAR gave you a start. Gain some knowledge so you can call BS when you hear it.

Good luck... . :)

suspect

I suspected I would get responses like that back.

DC must tell the tech and service advisors not to replace unless it is dead!

If I go to Cummins, They will charge me for a diagnostics. I can afford it, but the principle of this is what steams me!

Maybe go to Cummins, Pay for the diagnostics, show Tech the paper, Have DC pay for the diagnostics!

update

I called Cummins the other day for some parts on my generator. I was put on hold and listened to the Cummins advertisement. They said they could diagnose Dodge Cummins powered trucks. I talked to the Service mngr and he said call Dodge and tell them that you were going to take it to Cummins for a diagnostic. I did yesterday.

The Cummins Tech called me this morning and said it ran like a dog yesterday when he pulled it in the shop (no power). The Tech said he put it on the Dynometer this morning and it ran like a champ! The Tech also informed me that the Cummins Inject pump error code had been set 255 times (which is the max) on my engine.

I will update when new info comes out.

TWO digit codes!!!

I'm with 24V... Automotive technician BETTER not be looking for two-digit codes in this day and age. Four-digit (with a letter) codes have been manditory on vehicles since 1996!!! (Trucks I think came a little later, but still!)

Man I hate BS technician answers like that!

Another update

Cummins SE calls me and says it is the VP44.

Dodge is picking up the truck and going to replace it themselves.

OH well

I am going to replace the lift pump myself and add 6an lines.

11-14-02 update

I picked up my truck today after lunch.

I signed my name three times for $00. 00 due.

The funny thing about the receipt:

It made reference to the 0216 code!

I asked my Wife if she would help me draft a letter to DC about the hassle I'v had. She said I should not burn my bridges. Maybe she is right.

I am my own Warranty Station.

I have the Wildcat Diesel -8An system on back order.

I will concentrate on keeping the tank at least 1/2 full.

I drove my truck for 4 straight hours after I picked it up.

It ran like it use to! :)

I am glad Cummins SE was around, They did the job I expected them to do. TOP NOTCH

I am very glad to have TDR. All of the resources are great!

It would have been a lot more frustrating without the knowledge of this club.

I hate to say it, but I think the dealers knew what the problem was, then just didn't want to deal with it.

I am glad that I have a couple of GOOD dealers in my area and don't have to play games like you did.

MPatrick: Glad to hear you're back to normal. The truth is out there! I agree, the dealers knews something was wrong. Unfortunately most mechanics out there are afraid to work on anything without gas and spark plugs.
