There was a artical in the newest TDR mag about a fellow member who modified his stock air box for winter use so it draws only warm air from the engine compartment,he also has a full winter cover on the front of it.

My question is: cold air is much denser than warm air, why would you not want cold dense air forced into your engine instead of warm air with less density?

A second question: where does the air going into the turbo come from? Is it all exhaust? or is there fresh air also? thanks

The idea is that in the winter you'll get quicker warmup (and better combustion when the engine is cold) drawing warm air than cold.

If you're asking where the turbine flow comes from, it all comes from the exhaust manifold. The compressor, on the other hand, is drawing air from the filter.

That's why I believe cold denser air is better to be compressed, warm air is better for detonation.

When it is minus 40* and a howling wind you do not need cold dense air. Even the warmer air that he is drawing in is still plenty cold. A lot of the big rigs have a factory shunt built into the air intake so that you can get warmer air in the extreme cold. It is the same with weather fronts. I have the one from Alaska Tent which covers the intercooler, the same reasoning that when it is that cold I don't need the intercooler cooling the charge air as it is already to damn cold. It is also beneficial to cover up the oil pan in extreme cold as the oil does a lot of cooling as well. This was about the only way I could get decent heat from my 91 and the 94.

The warm air in winter helps keep the enigne warm.

I dont think that a modifed box is necessary, the winter front does plenty for warming the air. I can see IAT's over 100* at 80mph on a 10* day with 2/4 flaps open on the Mopar winter front.
