I have a 2002 QC 4WD Auto and I have a question. I live in Northern Minnesota and cold weather is a fact of life. The problem I have is that my trans won't shift through all the gears until it warms up. Is this normal? I sometimes have to drive 5 miles before it will shift in to top gear and lockup will occur. The warmer it is the faster it will perform correctly but up until 50 degrees above zero it has this "problem". It is works totally fine after it warms up but it is truly puzzeling why this happens. Any comments are welcome. The truck has 58,000 miles and gets TLC from me at all times. It has never towed anything and is primarily a road runner. RSVP.

The transmission has a temp sensor and to save on wear it won't go past 2nd gear until the transmission oil temp is above about 50Deg. Perfectly normal.

I thought I read the parameters are that it will not shift into od until engine temp reaches 140. Mine is the same way but I knew it was normal. just not sure of all the parameter details.

Same thing here . Now if you put in neutral when it idles wont that pump the fluid for a faster warm up time ?

Yes it will. Just make sure the e-brake is on, and wheel chocks would be recommended (I know, most people, myself included, aren't going to do that).

Hey guys, I want to thank you all for your responses I think I understand it better with your input. The thing about warming up with the trans in neutral makes sense and it does circulate the most ATF in that "gear". I just wish that my engine would warm up much quicker than it does. My brother has a 1999 Ford 7. 3L diesel and his warms up much quicker and stays warmed up unlike mine. My truck takes forever to warm up and in really cold weather even if I leave it running after it gets up to operating temp and go into a store or something the temp drops off back to a much cooler temp. If you guys know what gives in this instance please provide some info. Thanks in advance!
