Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Cold Engine, Cold Cab

My 1998.5 always heated up nicely. I had a cooling system flush about 6 months ago and temp gauge and cab heat was all good afterwards. A few days ago I drove from Portland, OR to the coast (in mid 30's F temp) and noticed the temp gauge needle never moved and there was no cab heat. I would like to drive back to Portland (1.5 hours) before I look at this. But am worried there might be some combination events that may have the engine actually overheating but not registering on my gauge (why I don't know) and that I might cause some damage if I don't address the issue here and now. The radiator is is full and green with 50/50 antifreeze.

Any idea of what might be happening but more importantly if I should not take the trip back home until I resolve the issue.

Sounds like you need to throw another thermostat in it. If you don't have the tools most aauto parts stores will let you use what you need while you change it in the parking lot. There are 2 temps available, 180 and 190 degree. The 190 is the better stat to get.

I would wait until you get home and capture as much of the new anti-freeze as you can. The area of the stat is a nicely machine area, and a new gasket seals well. It is common for a flake of rust to get in the stat seat and then they run cold. Has happen to both the B150's in my boat.

I think you probably need a new thermostat. The cummins stat is arguably worth the money, but at least get a usa made one. As for wether to change it now or when you get back, to me it depends on the weather. Do you want to drive 100+ miles with no heat or defrost?

I have the same problem put two new stats in and no change i have a piece of cardboard over the radiator engine still runs cold

Thanks for the replies. I agree, it is just the stat. Back home now and with warmer weather I have some heat. I will order a Cummins stat, I like the made in USA aspect. --jd

Please report back when you get that stat swapped out..it has been my experience that using an OEM stat has cured any inconsistencies I have had, I would be interested if it does the same for you.
