6 Degrees today started no problem, no plug in.
Steve says colder weather is coming, it is 1 Degree right now, I've Amsoil 5w-30 in the engine, and Amsoil Diesel conditioner in the tank. I am not plugging in, just to show you Newbies that it will be allright!

Oh, by the way, how are you STRAIGHT 90W boys doing now? A certain HIGH ranking TDR administrator, insisted it did not get this cold in Michigan, and his truck was always in the garage anyway. Guess what? Garage is full, and the truck is out in -5 weather!
Did I mention all those extra extreme pressure additives need heat to activate them? At -5, how many miles does it take to warm them up? Don't worry, it will only grind a few thousands off, and winter is not that long!!! Besides, the money you saved over a synthetic will pay for any damage in the long run!
What did you say? It cost more than a synthetic? OUCH!

This early winter caught me with my pants down. I had my tractor torn apart to rebuild it before the snow came, and had three motorcycles in there too. I put the tractor back together last week so I could plow but hadn't moved it and 1 bike over to the other side of the garage. Well moving the tractor was easy - the bike (my mom's) must have water in the brake fluid because the front brakes are siezed. I tried bleeding off a bunch of fluid but no go, so I dragged the sucker across the slick driveway to the other side. Now the Beast is all warm and snuggly in his bed (for some reason this is the first vehicle that I consider male)! I even turned on the torpedo heater to warm it up so he'd have a good nights sleep. The temp is supposed to hit -10 tonight with the windchill at -40 - brrrrrrrrrrr. BTW, did I mention that we've gotten nearly 40 inches of snow this month? It's a record.

P. S. Amsoil may be in the truck soon! What happened to our mild winters?

It's amazing my Freightliner had 600,000 miles on it when I sold it... . how can that be ????,,,never used synthetics in it,,,maybe it doesn't get cold enough here in New York... . now that you mention it,,,,our 22 Kenworth tri-axle dumps don't have synthetics and they're still running,,,,and the Oshkosh mixers,,,,they're still running too,,,and our six Kenworth tractors, detroits in them,,,run every day too... . never had any of 'em plugged in either,,and our 988 cat, two 980 cats, 7 966 cats,,D9, D8, and our pc300 excavators,,,they all start and run too,,and our three flowerchokes... (ugh) and my ol' 95 cummins,,,,she gets plugged in,,,,other wise,,,,no heat for about 6 miles,,,,must be the air around here... LOL... maybe I better get synthetics in 'em so they keep running... . (might have to go to the bank to buy the oil though,,,huh... . #ad

Just to let you know about the Cummins durability (like I need to), I started my Cummins at -18F, unplugged, and after sitting outside all night. I was visiting some relatives in MN when I did this. No problems. But, I would like to add, the power steering didn't care for the cold start. Need to change that fluid over sometime soon. Then again, the rest of the truck didn't care for the start either. Man! That baby was stiff!

Never said it couldn't be done, but I have heard from enough newly converted gas owners that are scared to death!
Doc,
I also ran that Rotella, and see in how you are gettin old, maybe you didn't notice, but there IS a difference between plug in and no plug on the petros, been there.
I have had oil pump shafts break off.
I have been on jobs building plywood huts to put torpedo heaters in to get equipment running.
I have a 1973 Fiat diesel tractor, that you have one chance to fire it, or the batteries are too weak to turn over again, get the charger. I switched to syn, last year, and it fires up first try!
I have worked for companys who buy ether by the cases, but buying synthetics cost too much??
JD, Now will you tell me you NEVER had a problem?? Not one? The synthetics just may make the difference between go and no go!
"Gettin by" and doing things a better way makes sense in my book.
New york prolly is warmer, we heat the air up fer ya on the past! #ad

You guys with your negative comments about synthetics crack me up, big time ! If you spent half as much time researching the benefits of synthetics, as you do making posts trying to knock it, you'd be a believer too ! Naw. Too much trouble.
As for cold weather, try this. buy a synthetic, any synthetic, preferably Mobil 1, (don't want to waste any Amsoil here, that's like wasting a beer, or dropping the Seagram's) leave it outside, overnight, along with a bottle of whatever regular oil you're using. Pour them out into a container(or on Granny's front steps if you're in a hurry to get the inheritance, so you can afford to buy synthetic). See which one pours out the fastest. Synthetic. It gets to the top of your engine faster, right? More protection, faster flow. Cost? It's cheaper in the long run, with a better grade of oil filter, or even a bypass filtration system (not totally necessary) you can run the oil a lot longer. What they call "extended drain intervals".
I've done my research reading homework. Have you? I've made an educated choice, an intelligent one. Knock away, oh ye of little faith...

I'd run synthetic if I could go for the extended drain interval, but I don't get enough miles on it in six months. Then I worry about condensation. The coldest I see here is around 25F. Haven't plugged it in yet.

I don't hardly ever see anyone here preaching about mineral oil the way you guys do about syn oil. Why don't you just leave it be,to each his own. The way you folks have to defend it makes me think that either somethings wrong with it or you're selling it.

I've plugged my truck in probably about as much as I have fingers on my right hand. Sometimes it has been garaged, mostly kept outside on the street by the girlfriend's house. Never have had to even do more than rest my foot on the throttle, and before I lowered the compression I didn't even touch the throttle at all. None of my diesels, in fact have ever failed me in the cold. Heck, the 99 Jetta TDI doesn't even have a provision for a plug and it takes forever to warm up in the single digits. Gonna spend the bucks and put an espar into that car. I got one in the Dodge and as little as I really have gotten the chance to use it, the burner really does put out some heat! Probably the best engine for coming to temp the fastest in my stable is the 86 Isuzu Trooper TD/IDI which literally runs at the limits of the small 2. 2 liter 4 cylinder non-intercooled engine. Next is the Dodge, which is more thermally-efficient and has nearly ten times the power of the poor little Isuzu. Diesels start in the cold, thank GM for the 350 Diesel for giving the American voting public the idea that diesels are bad and don't start in the winter.

Illflem,
You just don't hear the petro guys evidently. I have read post after post where the the petro guys get HOSTILE over how wonderful it is, just trying to prove that syn. guys are dumb and are wasteing there money.
It is ok when they preach, but we must be selling or covering something up!
I have said before, in my 32 years, I have never had a major oil related problem, but I have enough common sense to switch to something better when I have a choice.

I believe in them, if you want call it preaching, I guess I'm guilty. I have been known to preach about a few other things also, but since I'm not selling them, I guess that's allright.

Funny how the petro guys rush out to this thread, and insist you don't need synthetics, let everyone know that they are doing just fine, but that's not preaching?
Double standard?
I am waiting for their King to show up, and then we will see some preaching! #ad

Oh yea, it only got to -3, that is no test, dern it!

Briar Hopper,,,,if you'd finish reading before you got excited,,,,you'd realize I wasn't bashing your beloved synthetics, with 74 trucks and heavy equiptment, it's not cost effective for us,,,is that better ????

and MGM,,,no problems with the M11+ engines,,,a few computer problems,,,the detroits fuel system doesn't like the cold, and the Cat equiptment, what can I say, if you keep your batteries up, they always start. the last 6 Kenworths came with synthetics in the fuller transmissions and the eaton rears for the extended warranty' (see Briar Hopper, I'm not saying there not good). the flowerchokes don't stay around any longer than 2 years, and the dura-max we have ordered, well, only time will tell. Being a part of this company is great, gives you a chance to compare all the trucks in real time, not reading about them. anyway, I just didn't want you thinking I was bashing synthetics, I think they're great, just not cost effective for us... that being said... . You guys all have a HAPPY HOLLIDAY SEASON, get lots of new goodies for your RAMS !!!!!!!!11

Doc,
I don't want to hear about your old tired body breaking in the cold! Most people go to FLA at your age, I have no idea why you are still up there? You could help your buddies in Fla by fixing the voting machines!

Mike, you'll get white ones a couple times per century. I remember visiting grandma in Seal Beach when I was a kid,it snowed all the way down to the beach!Only a ½",melted a couple hours after sunrise. We went to the top of Signal Hill in Long Beach, only dirt roads and oil wells then,it was beautiful seeing the mountains behind LA and Orange Co. covered with snow to the base. Much of Orange Co. was undeveloped then, all white with orange groves sticking out,the Matterhorn at Disneyland was covered with real snow!Santiago Peak was white for the entire week I was there. Some folks say the iceage is returning, maybe you'll get to see it like that sometime too.

illflem,
Thanks for the heads up I would have lost a big time bet on that one. I live up by Santigo peak and it is all houses around here now!
Have a good holiday!
Mike

Hey, everyone has their opinion lets not get personal #ad

Oil is like trucks, there is chevys, fords, and ours, nice to be born in a country that gives us a choice! #ad

Just got back from walking my dog up on a hill behind the house, was cool outside so I wore a t-shirt to keep from getting sunburned, #ad
