DWI/DUI limit with a commercial vechicle is . 04 since the last rules change. Here in PA thats all the local's would enforce on a CDL driver and as most would tell you we should and are paid to know better, personal or commercial vechicle.
With the new changes abound it brings to light a new set of problems by making us practice what we do for a living all the time, being the safest and most courteous drivers on the highways by leading by example. Yep,I know there are those in the industry who will and do defy that and all our rules and laws, but, slowly the get whats coming to them, suspension or disqualification. I have no real problem with the changes, but, only with the way they get done. Most times we are the fall guys for other problems that end up with accidents being caused and its the media frenzy afterwards about a commercial vechicle accident that has caused it,the changes. Old saying fits here,What sells newspapers or brings on better tv ratings,a commercial vechicle accident or a automobile accident with a smaller mess. By rights though,we have alot of CDL operators who help to bring it on to us,you have seen them(or heard them via cb chatter).
Will it help, probably not much, just like the other changes all it will do is end up causing the CDL driver headaches. Could it make things in the industry better, possibly, but, not until the Federal DOT can find a better way to enforce what they have already laid on us. I,myself, feel it time they step on big businesses toes a little for making the companies run like they do by setting up unrealistic delivery goals and having the drivers do their own loading and unloading. CDL to me does not mean Commercial Driver Lumper and the time these guys spend doing it and then having to run all night afterward is a bigtime problem the government keeps sweeping under the tables and not addressing.
Nope,I like most do not like the new laws, but, like the others I'll play the game for now. Somewhere down the road they will run out of options and decide to take the root of the problems out and we will end up with the respect the industry deserves, better pay, benefits and not having to listen to people look down upon you for moving the nations freight, the stuff we all depend on today for our meager existence. Well my rant is over and I'll exit with this,I only have to wonder what is next for them to do and when will they fix the real problem which deregulation has caused... ... ... . Andy
