There are at least 2 jigs to repair the KDP without removing the gear cover, that I know of; anybody know of any others?

The first is the one for loan by various TDR groups around the country. This one drills and taps a hole from the top of the case. There is a second repair kit for sale by a fellow named Harold which drills and taps a hole from the front of the case. Anybody have any comments as to which is the better method? Or any other comments in general compairing these two methods.

Both do an adequate job, Harold's will let you push the pin back in if it's walking out. One you can use for free the other costs $70. I haven't seen Harold's but if it drills though the front of the case I don't see how it could work well, the cover is just sheet metal. If I had to pay $70 I would do the tab fix.

The CPFF KDP Jig is really slick. Once you see and use it, you will really appreciate its simplicity. It seems to be a perfect solution for a simple operation in a difficult place. A lot of thought went into its design.

There must be an east coast jig. (I think CPFF is from CT if I remember right) Get on the list or find a get together near you.

(and don't forget to send him a thank you)

Clarification: Harold's jig does not retain it from the front of the case. It is very similar to CPFF's version. It just has a little more of an angle to the retaining screw (points a little more toward the radiator) and Harold uses a set screw, whereas CPFF's version uses a flat-head screw that requires s little bit of a counter-sink in the case.

The biggest advantage to CPFF's is you don't have to buy anything. Just the cost of shipping to the next guy on the list. The down-side is the wait to get it.

As said about Harold's is the ability to tap the pin in with a punch through the hole if its come out a little. This is possible due to the angle of the hole and its size (a little larger than CPFF's).

This is first-hand knowledge. I've used both.

Cooker,

Harold's is not widely known. Mostly mentioned on the NWBombers site and to some degree on the DTR site.

I just ordered Harold's jig. I'll let you know in a couple of week's how it works. The deciding factor was the ability to push the pin back if needed (assuming it's still there and not ready to fall out on the way home tonight)

HAROLDS KIT

the jig works for way way way more than just 1 fix. use it hundreds of times. the 70 bucks is for the deluxe kit which comes with EVERYTHING but the fan hub wrench, air compressor, and the guy to fix the kdp. has jig, bushings, several xtra set screws, t handle wrench, air pressure regulator outfit to presureize with air to keep out shavings etc, drill bits, tap, and so on. sucka has everything. instructions included of course

the jig by itself is less. dont remember how much as most folks get the deluxe package as you can imagine. the jig from harold has a few nifty differences the cpff doesnt

as you know, harold isnt in this to make a living. pays for expenses of making them [material]and a little for his time. harold has fixed many kdp's in members trucks for no charge and has it down good and makes it look easy.

hopefully soon there will be enough jigs out there so folks wont have to wait for the jigs to do the kdp fix. harolds personal jig has fixed several dozen kdps mostly belonging to club members. also other members in the northwest have aquired harolds kdp jigs to do the kdp fix at club gatherings

another suggestion harold brought up. when ya fix a kdp, afix a sticker underr the hood, in door jamb, and a notation in the owners manual stating the kdp was fixed on such and such a date by so and so so that the future owner of the truck wont take the time to do the fix on a pre fixed rig and get down to it and find that somebody has already done the good deed and taken care of it. he'll see the sticker or notation and know that he wont have to worry about it. Oo.

Cummins considered the Tab fix an acceptable method ,

adding that the accessable bolts inside the case are usually found to be loose and in need of locktite and retorqing .

A Tab can be had from Piers, what does that tell you.

being the kind of guy i am, i have only killed one. my own. but i have passed the advise on to MILLIONS :D

OK, maybe really only 10's or 100's :D

Gene, I've personally done 34 but the NW jig has done over 200.

CPFF being the great guy he is will be sending out new/resharpened taps and bits to all the loaner jigs since some are getting dull.
