I notice that despite the "wild west" comparisons, those indicating having to actually pull their guns resulted in NO further action by the offenders - exactly what possession of a gun does in most cases - PREVENTS a crime or serious injury by a perp!

But of course, THOSE instances never make the headlines...

Here in California, it takes serious proof of "need" to obtain a CCW - just a desire holds no weight at all...

Actually, that depends on the county. I decided to purchase a house in the next county over... one of the main reasons being the ability to get a CCW. In Sacramento county unless you 'buy' a permit by donating a large amount of money to someone's campaign, you're screwed. In placer county they will accept just about any reason as good enough. An acquaintance of mine got his CCW after answering "I would like to legally be able to defend myself. " on the aplication. I said something to the effect of "I work with valuable computer equipment and sometimes travel to rough parts of town and would like to defend myself from a potential robber or carjacker". In the one on one interview the Sheriff didn't question anything... of course my fingerprints have been run through so many goverment computers by this point there's no way I could turn into a renegade hooligan and get away with it... ;)

BTW, my carry gun is a Taurus PT140... anyone else carry one of these? I love that thing... compact and light but solid!

And no, I've never had to use it... but if the situation arose, it sure would suck to be sittin there with a gun aimed in my direction and nothing to defend myself! Speaking of which... I need to get back in there and renew...

I have had a CCW since 1981 when I turned 21. I live in the city of Napa, County of Napa, State of California. Napa is one of 9 counties that make up the San Francisco Bay Area. Napa is also the only county in the SF Bay Area where a person has a chance of obtaining one. More CCW's are issued in this county than are issued in the remaining 8 counties that make up the "Bay Area", combined. The Police Chief of a City and the Sheriff of the unincorporated areas set the tone on the availablity of these licenses... ..... if they do not want the citizens to have one then they WILL deny virtually all aplications.

I have a friend who lived in neighboring Vacaville, Solano County who was Assistant Director of Corrections for Napa County, a former deputy Sheriff of Solano County, worked for the California Department of Justice, retired Air Force Master Sergeant, Vietnam Veteran, and owner of a well known and respected gunstore in Vacaville, was denied a CCW permit numerous times over by the Sheriff of Solano County. They appear to not issue them in Solano County despite how good your background and credentials are. He is now living in Pueblo, Colorado where the politics are a bit more to his liking.

My wife and I are both bought WA permits. I usually only carry when we go into a city. but she's always got either a . 38 snubby or her derringer in her purse.

Ive used mine once. i was gettin a load of straw and empting out the barn and there was a skunk living in the last few bales. He was noit welcome in this barn and if I got him to leave he would be back. There was no good way to get the last bale out of the corner w/o him shooting me so I managed to get him first with my old Charter Arms 44spl with 180g XTP. I was standing on the bale to get a shot and he was delt with fast enough he didnt even drip.

I believe in being able to carry, unfortunately for me I was dumb enough to let it expire before I could renew it. Try doing that in Mass. I had to "show" my double barrel 12 ga. once to an unfriendly neighbor whose viscious doberman almost attacked my son in my own yard. His story was " It's not my dog!". After that, I didn't care whose dog it was, my kids should be able to SAFELY play in their own yard. The next day when he saw me "cleaning" the 12 ga. , he decided to close his fence gate and keep the dog in his yard where it stayed until the dog's death- guess I wasn't the only one who hated the dog.

I don't know if you call it in self defense or a momentary distraction but I used mine one night. It was 1 AM and I was coming home from work. My gun was kept in a zip case on the front seat. A car came up behind me fast and followed me for about two miles. Then they pulled out to pass and as they got beside me the driver matched my speed. It was cold and my window was up but as I glanced over to the car in the passing lane, I noticed the passenger window was down. Then I saw the muzzle flash from the passenger seat and the bullet hit the top of my door. I started braking and the car was braking with me so I turned into him. By this time, I'm driving and fumbling to get my 38 out of its pouch. The car turned away from me and we both went through the ditch and into a pecan grove. I was mad as he$$ and pretty sure these guys were going to kill me. We were pretty well separated once we left the road and I saw a second muzzle flash come from the car and I fired a round. I don't know where I hit (or if I hit the car) but apparently they realized that I was armed and starting to fight back. They made a big left circle back to the road and I and went through a quick stop food mart back at the road at a high rate of speed. I had no intention of giving chase. The night clerk at the store called the police (according to them) after I went through the station and they stopped me a couple of minutes later. I was headed to the police station, anyway. Two rounds had hit my truck. One at the top of the door and the other hit the front left fender over the wheel. The police never caught the car. Fortunately, I had a concealed carry permit even though Georgia didn't require one for guns carried in the open (only concealed guns required a permit). Having the permit made it clear that I was legally carrying the gun. Did having the gun make a difference? I believe those guys would have continued to chase me around shooting at me until they got me stopped had I not returned fire. And no, I didn't know who they were. Now, I carry a semi-auto in a snap holster so I don't have to screw with a zipper to get the gun out. And I keep my concealed carry permit current.

I've had a carry permit since the early 70's but never really used it. I don't think I carried more than ten times ( outside of carrying for a security job I had ) and that was only in the beginning. Luckly, I was never in a situation to need my side arm.

After moving to Virginia, I secured an concealed weapons permit so if I ever need or want to carry, I can. It's always good to have the legal right to do so if one wants to!
