I'm hoping someone can help confirm that a lift pump sounds like my problem, I just searched through old posts, but can't seem to find anyone with symptoms exactly like mine.

As best as I can tell, my truck willl ocassionally die if the pedal is allowed to return to the idle position, regardless of whether that's at 60mph on the interstate or stopped at a light. Once it dies, I could either compression start it if I was rolling, or it would take 3-4 cranking cycles to get it to start again. I managed to limp it home by keeping it always off idle.

Does this sound like a lift pump problem? I've had the truck for 6 years and 87k miles and have never replaced the lift pump, from what I have gathered, this sounds like I may be living on borrowed time. Can someone confirm that this sounds like a lift pump before I start throwing parts at it?

Thanks!

Lift pumps start with a lack of power, or just quit all at once... we've had some issues with the lift pumps mounted on the engine... never had an issue where it died when the throttle was released... .

A TDR member and friend called me last week from the Portland, OR area with a similar problem. His '03 truck would die when he stopped at a traffic light. It would start only after trying to crank it three or four times. Similar to your truck, he limped back to the RV park by not letting it idle.

He took his truck to a Dodge dealer and they diagnosed it as a failing fuel lift pump. The Dodge dealer did not have any in tank lift pumps in stock and couldn't get any since they were on "national backorder". My friend called Geno's Garage and had the replacement pump that mounts on the fuel filter overnighted to Portland. The dealer gladly agreed to install it and charged one hour labor. My friend called again after the pump was replaced and says his truck is running great.

Thanks for the replies, I remembered on my way back to the truck how to pull the codes and it is throwing the code P0628, which I found as the code for fuel pump issue. I plan on ordering the replacement tomorrow from Geno's and hopefully be back on the road.

I purchased a fuel filter cap from Genos that is threaded for a pressure guage. I have been checking the pressure at every oil change (5000m) It has been reading a steady 8psi. Is this OK? Thanks for the help Jim

if your bone stock, yes, if you have more hp than stock you need to feed the engine with about 15psi, your engine will thank you. Oo.

can the hpcr be over pressured

i make 24psi at idle and 13psi wot loaded

2 carter pushers

Not really, exta pressure to the CP-3 will only make fuel flow better in the low pressure side of the pump. Mild to medium mods require in the 25-35 psi range to flow enough to keep rail pressure up, up to 100 psi can be used to for wilder fueling and pump modifications.

Rattling in the CP-3 under higher usually indicates an out of phase pump, should not effect anything else.

Yes more psi does help the cp3 make power, we were one of the first to test and verifie this back in 06' when we introduced the first modded cp3's'

The rattleing comes from high psi with a d-max pump, but one needs to remember the more psi they run the less overall volume and return they now have.

Volume feeds the pump.

Return cools the pump.
