I'm a little confused about all the posts where warranty was denied due to a fueling box. Let's say, for instance, that you've installed an edge juice/attitude. Before taking the truck in for service, you remove all evidence of the box and attitude, then plug the hole made in the manifold.

It seems to me that they only thing they could void would be the warranty on the turbo and the manifold itself.

Any thoughts?

They could void warranty on anything downstream - ie. trans broke because of non-factory HP (too high) - Warranty DENIED

We know a TST will kill a turbo and trans if put on too-high a level. So we here in my service dept will usually warranty anything once, but thats it

What you are talking about is fraud. If you want to play you have to stand up and pay for anything you break.

Mr G,

You are wrong sir! It is only legally defined as fraud if the Dealer asks you if you had the vehicle modified.

Best, Bill

I think Joe is speaking from an ethical point of view and not from a legal point of view. Some folks, like myself, like to do the right thing no matter who knows. Honesty is ALWAYS the best policy.

Well said. In the infamous words of some of the old timers that are no longer on the board "say after me ..... I am my own warranty station"

With that said some dealers are a little more lax than others. My service manager and I have an agreement. He will not warranty my injecton pump or my transmission or lift pump or turbo, everything else is fair game.

You start off the thread with a vague generalization about warranty/ fueling box and hiding stuff. You finish the post with "any thoughts?" And now, it seems your not too crazy about "any thoughts" after all. Why ask?

From a technical perspective, anything directly affected (fueling, computers, pumps and manifolds drilled) by BOMBing is potentially impacted.

IMHO, if you wanted to leave the ethical implications out of the post, you could have just asked what is the impact of adding gauges, fuleing boxes etc... to my warranty. I took your question "Your thoughts?" to cover the full spectrum of the information you provided. Comments like "Before taking the truck in for service, you remove all evidence of the box and attitude, then plug the hole made in the manifold. " pretty much invite the ethical comments.

I'm not trying to quible about what you were asking for... I'm just saying the first part of your post opens the door for the ethical comments. Notice I didn't give you any ethical advice, I just gave my opinion on your technical question and gave you my opinion if you don't want the ethical comments.

A little more thought on the question

Lane:

I gave the answer you could lose warranty on the pump, injectors, computer even the engine based on everything I read, not just a plug on the manifold. The reason I did this is if there is a warranty repair and there are "signs" there have been mods, the dealer will look deeper. The plug in the manifold is sign. They could check the computer for any codes or any fueling signatures in the monitoring software. There is lots on info stored in the black box: idle time, max RPM, total hours on the engine and much more. They may look for evidence of connecting the boxes, both physical mounting and connector tampering.

Fortunatley, all of the dealers I've worked with haven't givne me a problem w/ the upgrades on my trucks. This varies among the dealers.

i disagree

Actually you question specifically invites an ethical debate. You ask that if you remove the box and hide evidence it existed, how can they void warranty on items outside of the manifold (because you can't erase the hole) and downstream turbo. If they come up with internal problems associated with use of the fueling box will you step up and say "no, I'll pay. I've had a box on and voided that part of my warranty. " Somehow, I doubt it. The intent in removing the box is to preserve a warranty you no longer have a right to.

Your question wasn't "My ac crapped out - should I remove my EZ so they will cover it under warranty. ?"

Look at it this way:

1) if you take truck in for service with the box on what does DC have the right to refuse warranty service on?

2) If you take the box off what can they find and prove you had?

Obviously rmoving BOMBs before service work is a blatant attempt at defrauding the dealer into paying for work they may not be responsible for. It is no different than if your buddy loses a compressor while off warranty and you, still under warranty, swap parts with him and have his fixed on your truck. Is it still fraud if they don't ask "is this your part on your truck?". of course.

Evry one of us pays for warranty fraud through higher shop prices, higher vehicle prices, increasingly exclusive warranties, and more contentious interactions wiht service personnel for legitimate warranty claims. Your deceptions dips into our pockets.

I did not understand the nuanced meaning of the original question, ya might need to be more clear, seeuns how I retired from the Marine Corps after 24 1/2 years.

I can relate to this post somewhat. .

I have bad ball joints on the 03 along with a RR window that won't go up with the driver controls. Normally I would just fix this stuff myself on a Saturday but buying 4 new ball joints and a master switch doesn't seem right at 31K so off to the dealer for warranty.

Now something just doesn't feel right dropping it off with the box on, gives me a weird feeling like my rear axle warranty may be flagged, should it? maybe. . but not so sure. . cuz I have a 235hp CA SO with a puny VA 65hp box so its got less hp than my new 05 with the same rear axle.

I elected to leave it on but dropping it off gave an uneasy feeling as to what they might say. I hope they stick to the issues I am asking for warranty on and don't come up with something like-

You know Matt. . with that their VA box on the 65hp setting the rapid weight transfer to the back results then in an also rapid transfer to the front when you let off the go pedal and may have contributed to this trouble.

this is from my personal problems with daimler chrysler concerning warranty for a leaking headgasket that is now leaking again only out of the 100k engine warranty. ride them hard on all warranty issues. in my case dc does not want to cover the same problem they tried to fix 2 times under warranty and could not.

ouch

Lane,

We're just gonna disagree on the meat of this thread. However, say what you want about me, insult my mother, mail me feces, tp my house but for the love of god... say i voted for clinton. That hurts. I didn't vote for him and I sure as heck won't vote for his husband if it comes to that either :-laf

I did not realize you wanted the unethical opnion...

The ecm stores everything a dealer needs to know to void your warranty. The only question is if the tech at the dealership is smart enough to dig in and find it.

When I took my truck in for replacment mirrors (heating element went out of both) I tucked the comp up under the dash and put a small luggage lock on the OBD2 port so they could not plug into the truck easily.

If you don't want to hear the answers, don't ask the questions! Comments like those made will leave you wondering why no one will offer answers to your questions next time. :)
