when i crank my 97 up in the morn and give it a little peddal when the engine is cool, she smokes white/blue and pops and misses. Only does it when engine is cool and under no load. Injector going bad?? any help?

This is very typical of 12-valves. Best thing is to let it idle for a minute. If the timing slipped it will definitely cause this problem.

That's good to know. Mine does the same thing

ditto, i am curious what advancing my timing (if my snap on goober ever delivers the bloody kit i ordered almost a month ago) and bigger injectors do to it

Mine did that HUGE before I bumped my timing up. It would pop and bark and was more difficult to start under true COLD conditions (0 or lower). Now with my timing set and rechecked with the timing light method, I have no miss cold or warm, and it starts better cold.

The timing light method, you need an adapter that uses a Pezio electric sensor on the number 1 injection line. With that you can use a normal timing light and your self made mark to establish REAL timing. (the mark you made by using the dropped valve method of finding TDC of #1)

Well mine is doing the same thing, and I have a strong diesel smell and lots of white smoke. So injectors will not help? My buddy who had a ford, said his did the same thing until he replaced the injectors. My truck has 208000, and I really don't want to put new injectors in unless it is absolutely necessary.

Any help is appreciated.

JoshPeters: Where can you get this piezo electric sensor and what kind of light?

The sensor can be bought from the major Tool companies, Snap-on, Matco and such for dang near $300. Once you have it, the light is a timing light. It's expensive, as I personally haven't purchased one, but it's much much more accurate than the dial indicator/plunger travel method. Due to the difference in geartrain wear, gear mesh synchronization while moving, etc, the Dial indicator method can be off. Not the "end of the world" off but a couple of degrees.

Injectors may "help" but when I went from 180's to 215's to 370's I noticed very little difference in starting or reving. The 180's I had, had one bad injector. I honestly don't think Injectors will help much in this situation. Watch Piers's website, every once in a while 370's will go "on sale," if your looking for injectors.

Yup, I just talked to our local Snap On guy, He has the adapter for a timming light that snaps around the #1 injector line. $295. 00 from Snap On.
