Now that the season is going from warmer to cooler, I would like to remove my cooling fan to see if winter performance and motor warm up times are better (no doubt the warm up time will change). I know it is a clockwise rotation to remove the nut that holds the fan to the pulley. However I have yet to find a way to hold the pulley in place as I attempt to back off the fan nut. I have tried several different methods, but decided to post this to the crowd and see if any of you out there have found a way that has worked well for you without knocking the knuckles off the ole food grabbers. Thanks

After performing over 25 KDP fixes where the fan has to be removed I feel I have become an expert, here's how I do it. Place a long drift, round bar or even rebar on the right side (passenger) of the nut flat then give it a couple good whacks with a hammer. Many times the nut will then come off without having to hold the pulley. If it doesn't I hold the pulley on the part where the belt doesn't ride with a pair of large slip joint pliers, (Channel-Locs), never have had to grip hard. I use a 1-1/2" open end wrench to turn it, even though it is 1-7/16". Knock the wrench to the right with your palm or a hammer. Even though it doesn't look like it the fan will come out the top without removing the shroud or anything else. Your fan should be stored upright, supposedly the oil can leak out if it's laid down. You'll like going fanless, you won't want to put it back on. Wish I could remove mine but we have had record high temps in Montana all this week, wish it would cool off, I'm getting tried of watering and mowing the lawn!!!

FAN REMOVAL

I took a piece of aluminum angle 1"x1/4"x4 foot long and drilled a hole just big enough to slip over the pulley bolt. It than wedges against the other bolts and stops the pulley from turning. A sharp rap on a wrench will break the fan loose :D :D :D
