I was Thwarted by some Turkey hunters this morning while I tried to get a Coyote. I just thought I'd see if anyone else hunted them.

What kind of Calls, Guns and other equipment do you all use?

So far I suck at it... . Heard one on the way out this morning but it was so close to daylight he hung up on me...

An AR-15 and a jackrabbit in distress call = dead coyotes.

You could try something different and have the wind to your back - catch the little suckers when they are coming around to try to get your scent. I have killed more this way than trying to sit facing the wind.

Coyote Hunting after Dark on Private land is alright as long as you can prove you are after coyote..... (In Ky) Now getting caught with lights and so-forth... . It depends on how pissy the Warden wants to be.

I don't have any luck getting them after dark anyway... Sunup and Sundown when they move in and out of their bedding.

So far I've just used my 30-06 savage with composite stock, A CD I made with Varmint Al's calls and a Cass Creek Electronic Caller. And a Brinkmann Spotlight.

Couple of REAL close calls with them but haven't gotten one yet. I know I'm doing something wrong but i'm not sure what just yet.

What do you do with them after you kill them? I assume you can't eat them, can you? If it was allowed, I could hunt coyotees in my front yard, and I live in the city.

Dang, my brother in law and all of the guys down where he lives use greyhounds to hunt coyotes. They circle the sections in their pickups with dog boxes on the back and send one guy up through the middle to scare out the coyotes. They've got quick releases on the dog boxes so they can open the doors from inside the cab and the dogs will shoot out of the boxes after the coyotes. I think they only use a firearm if they have to.

I hunt them year round here the best way to do it at night is in winter under full moon with a good layer of snow to see them better at night no light needed just a 42mm or larger recticle scope to collect more light works great they will almost jump into your lap. I know because I had one land there once We both yelped and stooled ourselves. I had my back against a rock pile using a mouse squeeker and it jumped over the pile landing in my lap.

For a beginner the best thing to learn is to check out this web site

www.callingcoyotes.com

These are the best coyote calling videos I have seen I highly recommend buying 1 to learn from.

BTW check out my public profile Huntin coyotes is a very fun pastime of mine.

I hunt them from time to time. I use what ever rifle I have at the time. When calling you don't have to shoot very far. They will come right up to you if you are properly hidden and they don't get your scent. I think it is easier to call at dusk. They seem to be hungry and less cautious. Remember that when you shoot, stay down. There are often more than 1 in an area. The quickest kills I have had are with a . 20 tactical and 33 gr v-max bullets. A great little call is a Burnham Brothers Mini-Blaster. I have called more than my share of them with that little call. I still remember the first one I called in. Hunting at it's best. Remember not to waste too much time in one area and don't move the rifle alot. If you are looking at them through the scope, they can often see the lens flash if you move it. Good luck, don't forget pictures.

I hunt them up here in Pa but our coyotes are alot tougher to call in than wetern coyotes. Last time I went to colarodo it was a breeze to call them in. I use . 243 and some various mouth calls. The main thing is scent, keep scent free, rubber boots and don't wear anything leather. I use a special spray bottle mist with rabbit urine and coyote urine and give couple sprays around before callling to try and fool their nose.

You can use any gun you are comfortable with but a smaller caliber is recommended if saving the fur. Not a super fast velocity either this does more damage than a large caliber. At night in winter I use a shot gun with 00buck. Yes they come that close. Camo is very important they have excellent eyes. As far as calls goes if they have been hunted or called before they become Educated to it and having a variety of calls is a must for these dogs to get there interest. If you really want to get into it without the practice or know how to use reed calls, the new digital game calls are very good and very expensive also.

I've hunted with my 17 HMR with TNT rounds and my 30-06 Remington nozzlers.

Yeah Coyotes there on the farm will get that close... A good turkey gun would have been worth having around a time or two. I was sitting under a tree one night and just got the feeling that I needed to get up. . I started toward the railroad crossing and hit the light... Three stood at about 75 feet... Never got a shot at them.

;) Use a flat shooting weapon such as a 222. I just saw one cross the road here near the house in california this morning around 8:30 am. the dog just skipped across the road from the hill side of the street into the housing area and he was concentraiting on something because he did'nt even look at me in my dodge.

We just use a rabbit call and pinwheel 'em with a 409 grain 30" carbon arrow tipped with a Thunderhead.

Rifles for coyotes? You are kidding right? What's the sport in that?

I grew up with my grandad hunting coyotes with greyhounds. The chase was fantastic! I can still remember the dogs running a coyote into neighbors garage and under their car! It was right up against christmas and lots of relatives were coming in so my grandad crawling under the car and dragging the coyote out by its tail and stuffing it into a gunny sack. He penned it up in a big cage he had and turned it loose on christmas morning for everyone to see the race! Those were good times.

I use a Thompson handgun (old style) red dot and a single night vision scope. Red dot in green body - BINGO one less coyote! This combo doubles your range, you can take them out and they never knew what hit them. They really do not get cautious until they are closer to buildings etc. I just got a small handgun crosbow, putting a red dot on it and making a little mounting bracket for the night vision. Thought I'd get a little more sporting. I live out of town, tons of them, every night. My gurdian dog has killed many of them trying to get into my livestock and chicken pen. Pain in my posterior. I moved here 4 years ago - 1st year I did in 26, 2nd year I did in 45, third year I did in 48 dog did in 12, so far this year I am at 15 dog is at 6. Some of the ranchers here will give you as much as $150 per hide, average is $100. You could make a living killing coyotes. One of my neighbors calls them the Chinese Army - he says the Chinese will probably come at us the same way some day. I'm somewhere close to or just over 15K in earnings from the ranchers - tax free. I feed the meat to my stock dogs. I also have done in tons of foxes, same way. Sometimes I use a turkey call or just one of those dog squeak toys. I made a tape of my chickens when they are laying eggs, get plenty coyotes with that too. Really don't need to call them in they are everywhere.
