I have a cracked exhaust manifold that needs replaced. While I am doing that I thought I would add an exhaust brake. My search resulted in posts 8 years old so my question is, what is currently the most popular replacement exhaust manifold and exhaust brake? Thank you for your time and expertise! Jeff

Being a 2nd gen truck, you will have many decent exhaust manifold choices to choose from. PDI has been making exhaust manifolds for the OTR industry for a long time and I feel that their casting and finish work and quality control is top shelf. I would stay away from AFE for the the very same, but opposite, reasons. Most people choose to run a PacBrake compressor actuated EB, though some also run the BD vacuum operated EB. SInce you already have a vacuum pump on your truck, it might be easier to run the BD, though if you want to add on board air for any other reasons, I would recommend going with the Pac unit but use an upgraded and upsized compressor and tank then the ones they offer.

On my 2001, I had the BD brake that ran off the vac pump, which worked flawlessly for the 14 years I had it on the truck. It was a quality piece.....two thumbs up in my book.

I also have heard good things about the BD manifold and exhaust brake. Even if you still have the stock turbo, I'd get the remote 4" brake in case you ever upgrade the turbo.

Just be a ware that the manifold does not in most, if not all, come with all the gaskets and hardware for install. Check that out when you purchase.

True….Genos garage has what you need to do the install. They likely even have more then fair prices on the mani and EB…I would definitely check them out.

You may want to talk to jelag. he had a cracked exhaust manifold and replaced it with a two piece manifold. I don't remember the brand name. Do a search under jelag.

I bought the DPS in my signature, cause I could pick it up locally and assembled and save about 150.00. Right now they are offering bolts and gaskets included. One site that carries these is offering free shipping. Something to check out. Mine is holding up good, paint is still on it, no rust as in other manufactures products. You will need the manifold/turbo gasket and turbo bolts.
( no affiliation with DPS)

I have 333K on the clock, any of you have trouble getting the old manifold bolts out? I've seen 2 and 3 pc manifolds, any trouble getting these lined up for a good seat (seal) to the head?

I would go with the 3 piece thats assembled. USE plenty of RB on the studs It takes time for it to soak in. Caution you don't want to break a stud like the last guy did.

Thanks for the help. Exh man and brake got postphoned till rear axle seal and front wheel bearings get replaced. Will start soaking with Kroil.

I just installed a AFE 3 piece not good to hear they have quality control problems; so far so good. Their high temperature coating is working great.

I do not want to mislead you… people install AFE exhaust manifolds without a second thought and have zero problems with them. I was referring mostly to the quality of the finish of the casting…myself, and several others, feel that it should be machined better before releasing from the factory.
