Air Filter?

So what is the deal with this bottle? Are you suppose to empty it periodically? I've got 24,000 miles on mine and I've never smelled any oil odor or had even a drip of oil in the garage. I noticed that it's kind of gunky looking so I just wiped off the outside while I was crawling around underneath changing oil.

Can't recirculate crankcase air

The reason that the crankcase breather can't be recirculated like on gas engines is that the entire intake system after the turbo is pressurized. the crankcase is vented to the atmosphere. [zero pressure]

The only way that the crankcase vent could be run into the intake is to put it into the system before the turbo, then the oil would coat the turbo impeller, the inside of the intercooler, and the intake manifold with the black oil and noxious fumes. This would be disasterous to the MAP sensor and plug up the intercooler eventually.

I hope this explains venting the crankcase to the atmoshpere.

Greg, you are right but it is obvious you haven't as they use to say in their commercial's"driven a Ford lately?" As I said in my post above Ford's better idea plumbs the breather into the intake sytem before the turbo. It makes a heck of a mess but there a whole lot of PSD's on the road with that setup and the Map sensor was one of the few things that never broke on my POSD.

gee, another reason to be glad i don't drive a flowerpoke... ... ..... let's see is that #433 or #434??? can't remember any more!!:D

Plead Ignorance about PSD's

I don't know anything about the Phord PSD's, except that my buddy who has one likes driving my Ram much better!

I have a lot of heartburn about dumping the crankcase vent fumes and oil back into the turbo and intercooler. That intercooler is huge, and it is cooled by ambient air [can be very cold], and all the oil, water, and fumes [some acidic] will get condensed in the intercooler. I'm willing to bet that there will be a few problems with PSD intercoolers pluging up from sludge and/or ice buildup. Especially when they get a few miles on them and develope a lot of blowby.

I personally want only clean, filtered air going through my turbo and intercooler.

Just how sensitive the MAP sensor is on our Cummins engines is yet to be seen by me, I've not yet had any problems with any of them. I've only read about MAP sensor problems here on the TDR Site.

I hate the stink from the breather pipe, and don't like the mess the bottle makes on the front of the engine, [makes me think the front crank seal has gone out], but I'd rather put up with this than make my engine rebreathe this stuff!!

Just my two pennies!! Greg L;)

breather bottle

lsfarm:

take 30 min and a few bucks and eliminate the bottle. 5/8" or 3/4" heater hose instead of the jhose to the blow by bottle. terminate it wherever you want to. i put mine back by the transfer case, ending in a crankcase filter that just fits in the end of the 5/8" hose. just be careful not to have any low spots in the hose. condensation would surely pool and freeze where you live and block the breather action. i don't remember the number of the filter i used, i just took the hose to the parts store, and fitted one in the end of the hose... ... Hastings CB47 sticks in my mind, but may not be correct.

Re Breather bottle

Thanks Herb, just one more project to do. I'll probably do your mod when the truck is up on the hoist getting the DTT TC and VB installed.

I think my '96 truck dumped the breather on the front diff, made it look like it had a leak, I can't remember on my later trucks, they were all serviced by the dealer, [perk from work]. But now this last one I bought, and I'm doing my own service, $65 for an oil change at the dealer!!! No way!!

Thanks for the hints, I'll get to it eventually.

I saw in your Sig. a JD 2650, Is this a later brother to my '73? JD 2630?? 70HP 4cyl farm tractor??

Later, Greg L

cb filter

checked when i got home tonite--the filter that fits right on the end of 5/8" heater hose is a Hastings CB27--so much for memory. dang these senior moments... ... :(
