I'm getting an occasional clunk in the rear, and constant grinding and tapping sound which speeds up and slows down w/ the throttle. I jacked up one side at a time and let it spin at idle, and I get noise either way. So, my truck is out of commision- my only vehicle. I don't know if I have a Dana 70 or 80, and I'm pretty oblivious to the inner workings of the rear. Any suggestions? Should I haul it to a shop, or would you suggest trying myself? What's the first thing to check? If I do try the repairs myself, who makes the best parts for the money, and should I upgrade anything while I'm in there? Any help would be great! Thanks! I'll continue researching in the archive, but wanted to post, as time is of the essence.

Check for any kind of slop around the pinion (where the driveline goes in).

As for 70 vs. 80, if you have a sway bar across the back it's an 80.

OK... had to get to work so I borrowed my grandparents' old 94 Caddy. Talked to a local shop that's supposed to do good work, and they'll put all new bearings in it for $350, but they can't do it until the 4th of April. Are there any upgrades I should have done while it's apart? I should probably repost this in another forum since I'm not grounded anymore.
