Forgive me for this question, it is probably a dumb one. I dont have much knowledge on the 24V's. I was talking to a guy that said he has an 02 and he consistently gets 8-10 mpg, whether empty, loaded, etc. I told him the obvious like fuel filter, the "egg between your foot and the gas pedal" trick, etc. Are there any other obvious reasons why a 24V would get that kind of mileage????

The reason I ask, is because he said he is so dissapointed he wants to buy a powerchoke!!! (I wasnt even going to go into the problems the 6. 0h no has with him!)

thanks in advance,

Jeff

If it's that bad there has to be something wrong with the truck, IMHO... Lift pump maybe??? Many other things I guess, but I'd get it checked out...

I don't even get that low towing (small snowmobile trailer) in the mtns at 75mph on the interstate... .

does the truck seem to run smooth? coiuld be a serious fuel problem, ie:put the wrong fuel in it... i remember a while back we got a load of home heating oil (or something like that) instead of diesel, all of our equipment ran rough, but it ran... might be something to consider

I thought about bad fuel also, but he said it has done it since new. I think it may be a combination of things. I think he drives it hard for one. I also dont think he maintains it. I'll talk to him more and see what I find.

thanks for the responses,

My lowest single tank MPG EVER (1150000 miles) is 10. 12. That was towing a 7000 # utility trailer at 85-90mph in 101 deg F in northern Florida.

Over the past few months I've dropped my normal commuting speed from 72 mph to 68 mph. I am averageing 1. 5-2. 00 mpg better (17. 0 vs 18. 5-19) on winterized fuel.

I also used to complain about my mileage 12-17, but then I thought about it . I have 5 miles of gravel road to anywhere. most of my trips are 30-60 mile trips and the truck always has a 450 gallon water tank on it pulling a trailer with a 500 gallon tank on it or a 26 ft horse trailer with 4-5 horses. then over thanksgiving I took a 500 mile trip to arkansas, put cruise on 65 on the trip down and back, got 20. 5 mpg with the 450 gallon tank on but empty. So its just how we use it. mileage figured long hand.

My mileage was terrible for 15k miles before it started to jump up. Now at 36k I see 18mpg unloaded, and eggs would not last very long under my right foot.

Does the 8-10mpg guy calculate by hand?

I have 4. 10's and a six speed. Seems to be the lower end of the fuel mileage pole, and I get between 17-18 MPG. I have a lot of stop and go driving everyday too. Worst I have gotten was 12mpg pulling a trailer and two trators back ( approx. 10,000-12,000 pounds) from Knox. TN. through the TN. Gorge, and that was showing the truck no mercy. I would ask what kind of filters he is using. That makes a huge difference, he could be using a Fram. :-laf We had to buy a fuel filter at the last minute and had to get a Fram for our backhoe. Worked on bleeding the lines for hours and even replaced the primer pump , which needed replacing anyway, to find out the Fram filter was no good. Went to a different auto parts store and purchased a Wix filter and in 45 minutes had the Backhoe running.

I also just thought that maybe he needs an air filter. I'll see if he replaces those often, or at all.

thanks for all the other solutions. hopefully I can keep him in the cummins!

Dang TBone... you have 1,150,000 miles on your '01. 5? That is some DRIVING... :)

My dad and I get 8-10mpg in our 39' Cummins powered motorhome (~25K lbs) running 70-72mph, pulling a 4K lb vehicle. I'm with these guys... I'd have it checked out. Something ain't right.

8-10 is way lower than it should be, I have kept track of every tank of fuel in my 01 and I average 15 mpg overall. Anyway there are a number of things to check. Here is my list:

Check the air filter (look at the filter minder first), if its dirty change it.

Check all the hoses on the air system, you might even want to pressurize the system. Loose hoses can cause boost leaks.

Check the IAT sensor - it could be bad, or very dirty.

Check the MAP sensor. The best way is with an ODB2 program so you can see the readings. A bad MAP will cause limp mode all the time.

Check for codes by cycling the the ket on/off three times, leaving it on the last time. The codes will come up in the odometer window.

Change the fuel filter.

Take the truck to the dealer and complain of poor power and mileage. The truck is still under warranty unless he drives the bejesus out of it.

Good luck... .

Heck, I can get 9. 5 - 10 MPG pulling our 16,000 lb GVWR 5th wheel (see signature) at 70 MPH through the Texas Hill Country with 4. 10 gears! My setup is one of the worst for fuel economy, and I can get 16-17 MPG at a 70-75 MPH unloaded cruise on the Interstate.

That ole boy needs to git his truck fixed! :{

Thanks for catching that, I was a bit under the weather yesterday. The correct figure is 115,000 miles. Still a lot for a daily drivers that is only 4 years old.

Sorry

No prob TBone... I figured that's what you meant. Just ribbin' ya a little.

But yes, 115K is a lot in my world as well. I have just over 57K on my '01, which is also a daily driver.

16. 3 avg with a 50/50 mix of towing and not. Trailers are anywhere from 7000 to 14000. He just has a truck that is sick and needs some care.

I have an extreme leadfoot (cold in the winter, believe me), and the lowest I ever got was 12. 7 and that was pulling 28000 lbs on a 20,000 lb 2 axle trailer. I get 17. 9 to 18. 8 just driving around local with the 1 ton around all these hills (big hills too)
