I started out in the back seat, hey that wasn't too bad. Then got in the front seat with the seat in the position I would want, I had to move the seat up a few inches. Then back to the back, don't let that little back door fool you, the room is there. There was another guy looking at the truck and he thought the same thing. My problem is with common rail fuel injection in the future I don't want to pay big $$$ for those injectors like the Fords. Just my personal findings and opinion. I'm only 5'11" and would have no problem riding in that back seat for a couple of hours. Course I would rather be DRIVING!:D

i goofed on my response for the poll , i answered before reading the question , i voted no and it should have been a resounding YES ...

mojo , riding in the back for a couple hours ??? how about riding in it for the better part of a day ???

i have no need for a crew cab at present , but when the time comes it won't be a Dodge sorry to say . between the ugly looks of the new truck , the small cab and seating position in the rear and my general disgust and contempt for DC i'll be building one on my present chassis or riding in a ford .

new truck

around these parts, the majority of the new dodge 1500's that i'm seeing on the street are the new quad cabs. i suspect that the majority of the new diesel buyers won't be TDR members. the new truck may suit the "majority" of the dodge/cummins buyers, and be a great seller for DC. yes, some won't buy one because the "crew cab" isn't... ... ... ... it may fill the bill for a lot of new truck buyers. apparently DC believes it will... ... time will tell.

If you think there is equal room in the Ford (or Chevy) Crew Cab and the new 1500 Ram Quad Cab, you should make the comparison again. I have sat/drove/ridden as a passenger in the back in all three, and there is a difference. Ford and Chevy offer a true Crew Cab. Would I buy an 03’ Quad Cab? Probably. Would I prefer to have a true Crew Cab? Yes! For me, a true Crew Cab would offer the flexibility that I need between family and job. The next go around I will take a longer look at the competition, but as many others have mentioned…I sure would miss the Cummins. Unlike some members, I really do like my Dodge truck…but the best part is the Cummins. In my next truck, I’ll look for the total package (as I did with my current truck). Although it seems like a lot of folks have formed their own opinions about the new 03’ without seeing/driving it in person…the jury is still out for me. I’ll take a look at it when it comes out and then form an opinion. Just one guys 2 cents worth!

I believe DC is trying to shave costs by adding a shortened version of a crew cab. I am very anxious for the new crew cab to come out, but I believe with the rest of you that Ford and Chev have a larger back seat area. The doors on the Ford and Chevy crew cabs are almost the same size as the front doors. I think Dodge short changed its loyal fans by compromising with the length of the crew cab. Now they can build a chassis on the standard old framework, charge extra $$$ and tell customers what a great job they have done. I have gotten into the back seat of the new 1500's and I am truly dissapointed in the construction of the rear seat. It was pliable like the base was made out of cardboard. You could bend the last three inches of the seat cushion with your hand. I guess they only want to support your tailbone and leave the rest to chance. I really don't think they will hold up under constant use, like scout groups or family, unless the kids are under 100 pounds.

The article looks great, the author did a wonderful job describing the new vehicle. I can't wait to have them show up at the dealerships.

Base Costs

Not sure this is comparing apples to apples - but when you look at similar rigs - base price - DC has a huge advantage in cost in teh 1/2 ton "crew" cabs. This from KBB. COM

quad cab

i was told by someone who thought he knew, that DC tried to place the "quad cab" price wise with the competitions' quad cab prices, and below the crews. theory was that someone considering a ford quad cab might opt for the dodge for the same money, with the shortened crew cab configuration.

I'm with MM and several others on this. my present truck is for sale, as soon as it sells there will be another Dodge rolled into my driveway. but the very next time it leaves (several months i'm sure) it will be a crew cab, built by ME.

I am tired of wiating for them to get their heads out of the lower backs. i have a family of four and we use our truck for horse showing, long trips, and some heavy hauling about twice a year, that is a five hour drive one way. i cannot wait another day.

take my truck please!!!

You Guys!!

Good I love this Site!!!

I was having a very bad day at work and as soon as I get a free minute I'm on this site and I read this post!! Well since I now drive a ford and I'm starting to like it more and more as the miles climb, I just what you guys to know that three buddy?s and I just drove 2100. miles in three days and it was great, The Room in the Crew Cab is Incredible. I don't think any of you would want to ride in the back seat for 20 hrs. Or could you sleep two guys in the back, one on the floor and one on the seat! I wouldn't or couldn't ride in the back of my dodge for more than 2-3 hours, my knee would be killing me... I can sit in the back of my FERD with my legs crossed If I could cross my legs:D :D I'm a big guy too 6'2" 300+ so I need room and that's why I bought the ferd. Now when we do something with 3-4 of our friends we take the truck and Not my wife's car. . You can see picture of the truck and the trip on https://www.turbodieselregister.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=31907

Bhutchings,

Now they can build a chassis on the standard old framework, charge extra $$$ and tell customers what a great job they have done.

If you looked under the 1500 you were sitting in, you should have noticed, the entire frame and suspension is tottaly different. The frame itself is "Hydroformed" and is one piece of metal formed like a tube. Nothing like the current framework. I really don't think Dodge built a cab on the present framework we have in our trucks. Also, the truck is not billed as a "Crewcab". It is an extended cab "Quad Cab" If you caompare this truck with any of the other Ford or Chev "Extended Cab" trucks, you will see they are much bigger inside.

Now whether Dodge will ever make a "Crew Cab" again, that is too be seen! Personaly, I do not have a need for a "Crew Cab", but if I did, I would most likely end up with the "Quad Cab" that Dodge is building, as I like the Cummins engine over any V-8 designed Diesel that is currently being built by Ford and GM. Just one look under the hood of Ford or GM Diesel pickups convinced me of that!

My . 02 cents worth

isn't Chevy hydroformed steel frames. I really like the idea of a slightly larger cab, quad cab. When I drive, there is usually only one person in the truck, since it is a company truck. When we take extended trips, we take the family sedan. For jogging around town, I will usually hop into the truck. It is the first vehicle in the driveway and noone parks behind me. We have 4 vehicles in the garage and driveway, so one vehicle is always parked behind the other. I use half of the garage as a storage area for parts, components, etc that are used for work.

No 2003 for me!

Fellow Rammers:

I was in a DC show room recently where a 2003 1500 4X4 QC was sitting exactly side-by-side with a 2002 2500 Cummins 4X4 QC. The cabs look to be exactly the same length. I found the back seats to be about equally uncomfortable, especially the seat backs. DC did apply its "cab forward" technology on the 2003 where they increase the passenger compartment by moving the dash farther forward more of the engine is covered up.

For comparison, I test drove a Chevy Duramax crew cab dually with the Allison transmission. Drove great, outstanding back seat is the most comfortable and most room in the bunch. Drove a Ford, which took a close second in the rear seat comfort department. Off the subject, but both Chevy and Ford had transmission temp gauges in the dash.

I'm one of the folks who really wants a full-size crew cab dually to carry 4 adults comfortably on long trips towing my 5th wheel. I'd rather it be a Dodge Cummins, but I may have to go with brand F or brand C. Oo.

We'll see,

WILL DC EVER WAKE UP??????????????

JM2C:D Is DC afraid to compete directly with chevy and ford with a real RAM? That is a full size crew cab with a CTD? I have sat in the new 150 four door and there is no comparison in rear seat room with the drivers seat to the rear most postion with that in my wife's 97 ford crew cab.

If DC did make one I would not be having fun creating my own from a dodge 78 crew and a 97 12v CTD. Maybe being over 6 foot Oo. shades my thinking.
