I've gone through many times without any problems though once they wanted to see how much money and credit card I had. I guess they wanted to make sure I wouldn't run out before getting all the way through. Beginning next month, I think, passports will be required...

Well seems some aren't welcome up north

Well the folks tried to get into Canada heading north out of Glacier NP this summer - they got searched from stem to stern - seems retirees with big 5th wheels are on a profile or are maybe just unwelcome - US border patrol said it happens quiet a bit..... not very nice folks there on the Canadian side, understand it took an hour or two and had Mom in tears. Needless to say they brought their rig and money back across directly and spent the rest of their vacation in WA State... . So make sure you got your ducks in order if your going north and hope you don't fit the profile... .

Crossing

I would also caution that fruits and vegtables might be prohibited from crossing either border (coming and going). The usual alcohol and tobacco questions and are you leaving anything when you're in the country.

Courtesy and a smile will go a long way.

Good luck and enjoy your visit.

If you're really interested in the road trip up to Alaska, one of the first things to do is get a copy of the Milepost book. It's full of details on all the different routes, fuel stops, and much more.

My experiences with the border folks in either direction is that they all have great a--hole potential. Answer the guestions clearly, concisely and most politely. The US folks are the most paranoid after the 9/11 episode. Example ride an Alaskan ferry system then take the BC ferry system. ( your invited to tour the bridge on the Canadian ferry, going on the same deck as the bridge on the Alaskan ferry is considered a serious security breach). The US guys always have a guy with his hand on his gun standing off to the side. (Haines Alaska for example). Everybody got the same treatment.

In Hyder Alaska there is no US customs to enter from Stewart BC, but there is Canadian customs upon return from Hyder to Stewart. He ask's all sorts of dump guestions he already knows the answers to as he just watched you drive past him 1/2 before go up the street look at the bears and come back. But the dick head has to give you a hard time regardless.

I spent 9 weeks last summer in Alaska/ Yukon/BC. Finding diesel fuel was never a problem even in the most remote spots as there are alot of diesel vehicles around. The roads were all in very good condition. Yes there is some gravel sections here and there. But please do not cover the whole front of your rig with piping and screening to prevent stone chips it simply is not warrented, and it looks positivily ridiculous. You don't do it at home so why do it up there, a gravel road is a gravel road no matter if it's in Indiana or the Yukon. As long as your rig is in good mechanical shape and your tires are good and properly inflated you should have no problems.

The Cummins worked like a charm. Covered 11735 miles and burnt $2811. worth of diesel. I didn't mean to get on a roll here but I guess I did.

Before and after September 11 I crossed into Canada at least once or two a week. Been searched once.

If you have had a DUI, your not getting into Canada without special permission. Keep that in mind.

The first think I got was Milepost. Also sent email I think it was to Alaska.com( at least I think that is who I EMAILED) and got a lot of good magazines on routes, sites, etc. for both Alaska and Canada.

Should have said www.Alaska.org!!! :{

I go up at least once a year, and always go thru at Aldergrove... I think that's right. I show them either Piers' or DTT's business card. They get enough Cummins traffic there going to either, that they're used to it. I always get the "you drove 400 miles to have your truck worked on??"

I hate comming back into the US, and being asked by some smart @ss foreigner (Not a Canadian either!), if I'm a US citizen, when they have my id in their hand!

All I can say is it's a job I wouldn't want. Another year and you won't cross anywhere without having a passport, time to start is now, it can take months to get one.

Cheers,

crossing the border

I live in juneau Alaska

I travel back and forth across the border many times a year

I like prince rupert going south, thru the canadian rockies jasper, banf lake louise, in 10 years of crossing I have had 1 bad crossing into canada a miss communcation led to unhappy times.

and going south into US at the roosville crossing above kalispell MT, the US gaurds although semi polite tore the seats out of the dodge and emptyed my trailer because they suspected i was transporting drugs A harley in a trailer is suspect?? then guess who gets to put it back together. it only cost me 9 hours. and by the way this is what they told me, You have no rights as a US Citizen when you are on border patrol property your rights start after you cross!!!! I am a law abiding citizen no police record never arrested. land owner in 4 states, no probale cause. I guess i dont mind the taking apart of the vehicles

it is the not putting it back together. other than these incidents, most crossings are painless, my favorite crossing is above HAVARE MT the wild horse crossing they call it. there is a US gaurd there who has a 04 CTD who likes to talk shop about cummins, The thing now to have is a passport makes life very easy.

sorry about the soapbox also for the GOAT sorry about the Alaska ferry no visit thing I work on the ferry and up to 911 we used to do tours all the time. IT is beyond our control.

Chris, my wife and I are planning a trip to Alaska in July or August. We have a Dodge DRW and a large cab-over camper, (11'-3"). Two questions, 1, can we store a firearm at the US side near Glacier NP and pick it up on the way back? 2, We want to go to Juneau and would like to know if we can put the truck and camper on a ferry and what would it cost? Anything else you can tell us about Juneau would be helpful. PM me if you like. Thanks.

and when they ask if you carry money over 10,000 dollars, don't be a wise *** like me one time and reply with 'I wish" :-laf

Why not? Don't they any sense of humor at all? What did they do when you said, " I wish" ?

I agree with others and use Aldergrove or other small port-of-entry. Be sure not to take a handgun, and there is a fee to take a longgun. Highway 99 from Cache Creek to Pemberton is beautiful, BUT it has grades up to 15%.

A while back Trailer Life had a cartoon showing the family RV at the border. The quote from the young boy was " Bet you can't find my dad's gun".

Make sure your pet food is Canadian friendly as we had ours checked because it has bone meal in it (from Mad Cows, maybe). They'll ask how much alcohol and tobacco you're carrying also. They confiscated our pkg of Canadian hot dogs when re-entering the States at WA. Enjoy!
