Cruise Control intermittent

I have not been able to figure out the intermittent working of my cruise control. It works 80-90% of the time. If it "turns on" with the button, it works perfectly for that trip, and usually for the rest of the day. But occasionally it fails to "turn on" with the button and it will never come on during that trip. I do not have any messages on the display and no stored codes, and I cannot determine a pattern or reason. I have checked all fuses and looked for any potential issues but I am stumped. What am I missing?

comrade - might check your clutch pedal neutral saftey switch or wires. on my 2018 2500 manual, the dealer failed to put the wires back up out of the way of the clutch pedal. i gradually tore the wires to pieces, unknowingly by depressing the clutch. before the wires completely failed, my cruise control did what you describe. the truck thought the clutch was depressed when it was not i guess. just my .02 cents. good luck. cheers!

Sounds to me like a failing button pad, which seems more common than it should be.

I don't think it would be the neutral safety switch or wiring since that shouldn't have any effect on turning cruise control on, only on engaging cruise control.

I will check the chafed wire idea but I think it is more mysterious than either of these ideas, because of the way it occurs. It would seem like if the button was bad it would be completely intermittent, and would sometime "turn on" during a drive cycle, but it never does. Either it comes on normally or not at all during a particular drive cycle. If it fails to come on, I can drive all day and it will never come on when pressing the button.

With a canbus operation it’s only one wire and if the computer doesn’t sense the pad at startup it may not look for it again until the next drive cycle.

I know that all the bad pads I’ve heard about, or seen, work, or don’t, just like you’re describing.

Another item, which would be down low on the list, but still worthy of consideration, is the clock spring in the steering wheel.
That said, my prime vote would be for the button.

The failing/cheap button gets my vote, mine does this once in a while on cold mornings......next time it happens, give the button a flick with your fingernail......this always wakes mine up.

For a quick fix to turn it on (if the button doesn’t do it) Press the SET and RES button at the same time. Then use the button to turn it on. Sometimes you have to do it twice, but not usually.

Our 12' has the same problem also with the buttons for the EVIC...
