hey there im new here i signed up for this crew cab thread live in vic canada doing the 78 crew 4x4 short box cummins swap rite know, things bolt right to gether (thanks dodge) keep up the swaps
since christmas drove to colarado bought truck @cummins located trans 29spline transfercase, box in body shop,re welded all seams in cab, motor mocked up,possi bought for front, detroit bought for rear,2 sets little red express seats ready to go in etc,etc buildsalways go on and on. any comments on 4"exhaust?
What all is involved in this job (what else needs to be done - driveline, axles, etc)?
What's the overall cost of a single to crew cab conversion?
Any shops that do this?
I am no mechanic and while I like do everything I possibly can on my trucks, I know where my limits are... and there's no hubby to justify this project to!
No need to get a shop to do this! Before last December, I knew nothing about working on vehicles, now I am 3/4 way thrue, and I have not run into anything too bad yet. If you do get in over your head, that is what the TDR is for! Hope this helps.
I need honest opinions first. I don't know anything about welding or fabrication and the most involved job I've done is plugs on a '98 F-150. I'm single and while we do have a pretty nice auto hobby shop on base I don't know if this is a job I should be undertaking.
Don't get me wrong, I'd love to do this myself and be able to take the credit for it but I'd need a list of parts and what needs to be done to each part to make it work. I want a crew cab with a short bed. Do I need to have my frame stretched or can I swipe a 250 or 350 extended cab long bed frame and use that? Are y'all gonna be ready and willing to answer a plethora of questions from a total newbie? Oo.
Going to pick up my Crew Cab, it's a 1985 D350 long bed dually, the weekend after Thanksgiving. Will be using my current 1992 D350 Club Cab Cummins as the Donor for the drivetrain, most of it anyway. I'm going to convert the 85 into a 4wd and run a divorce NP205 behind the A518. Also going to swap the front end clip off the 92 onto the 85 and also the bed from the 92 will go onto the 85. The bed on the 85 is pretty bad, except for the dually fenders.
Just had to tell someone about my new upcoming project Oo. I will start a build thread once I get to the point of swapping the drivetrain over to the 85. The cab and suspension will be done first on the 85 before I start swapping the drivetrain from the 92.
Well, I've decided to go with a 5-speed (NV4500) verses the auto. Several reasons why, but the biggest is a cross between manual gear control, and that I really do like to shift.
So, selling my auto conversion parts: 2nd gen 47RE, less overdrive tail section (need 1st gen overdirve unit) and the NP205 to go behind it.
Also selling the Gear Vendor overdrive unit I have (bolts up to the back of a NP205).
Looking for: Brake/clutch pedal assy ala '93 Ram, NP205 from behind a Getrag (29-spline w/ adaptor), Getrag bellhousing... basically everything from a Getrag-equipped CTD 4x4... except the actual transmission - upgrading to NV4500.
I have been reading this for months now and have learned a lot. I have been collecting parts for years and as soon as the budget permits will start the actual repower. I converted the truck to propane years ago and have added every factory option I could find, but with 4. 10 gears and no overdrive it really sucks fuel. At least propane is cheap, but now its time for some real power. I expect this to take me quit some time to do as the work won't be done where I live but at friends place in the country. Shadrach
hey guys as of today I haven't thought hard enough if I am going to part out my truck or repair it but If I do I will have a complete drive train from a 93 auto 4x4 for sale If I can figure out how to post a pic of whats left I will but its pretty bad Body wise :{
I'm gald your ok, and I know what you meen about feeling that part of your family is gone. My crew cab is my pride and joy. Is there only body damage or is the frame tweeked too? I found my crew cab for $450 and I just picked up a rust case cheep so they are around if you want to rebuild. I have parts if interested
I have been following this thread for awhile also and even posted a couple of times... . my question this time for those of you with more experience. My 79 crew will some day have a CTD, but my question is will a 12V vs 24V be easier to install. I have access to a 98. 5 and have tossed around the idea of finding someone with a 12V that might consider a trade?
Not limited to the conversion, the 98. 5 has a unique (for a couple of years) tone ring that is mounted into a machined area in one of the throws near the rear of the crank. I have seen catastrophic failure (broken crank) with that. Cummins quit that (not sure which year) but that is enough to steer me away from a 98. 5. Other problems with the 24 valve injection pump also make me skeptical.
From the installation considerations, if you do much with boosting HP, regardless of which engine you select, you are going to want the later style or at least stronger mounts which you will have to fab/adapt since it isn't a 'bolt in' for the early frame. Don't know if there is info in this thread but there have been posts and pics of inovative solutions to the problem.
Otherwise, the engine is quite similar. There are issues with connecting the later style throttle and automatic transmission controls but you would certanly be well served to have the later transmission with OD and Lockup.
Might as well say Hi, I don't have a Crew yet, but the plans are in the works as the family expands in number. If I am lucks maybe I'll get it done before it is really needed.
Not my pictures but I saw them on pirate4x4.com and thought of MM and some others, the body work looks nice, but the chassis is a little large for my tastes. Should be nice when it is done.
