What about the rest of the parts? Will I have any major issues while putting in the axles or motor?

You will have an issue with the front axle. The second gens have a driver side diff and your truck has a passenger side diff. If you use the newer t-case your ok, but the newer front axles are not nearly as heavy duty as your original. The later ones have ball joint knuckles, a center axle disconnect, and unit bearing hubs, all of which are a step back in my opinion. Also, the newer axle isn't set up for leaf springs. There is no perch provision cast into the center section. You could either keep your current axle and use a right side drop t-case, or you could locate a Ford left side Dana 60 with at least locking hubs and maybe kingpins. The extra benefit of the Ford diff would be the fact that they are high pinion, great for reduced driveline angle. If you decide to keep your axle, you can convert to dually type hub/rotor assys to solve your wheel issues.

TKingsbury,

Very interesting thoughts. That it something to consider, first gen axles are stronger than second. What about the left side right side axle thing. Will the t case and all still line up in the trans tunnel? Thanks.

Has anyone here completed this swap? Or seen any good websites detailing the swap? I found a '84 Crew Cab, 2WD, dually near my parents farm for $400. Its got a good body with a wore out 360 gas. I also have access to insurance salvage auto auctions so I can purchase a '91-'93 donor for a reasonable price. There is a '93 coming up that has 102k miles and a 5-spd transmission. It also has a tan interior like the Crew Cab I found so I can use some interior parts.

Is this going to be a straight-forward swap? I can park them both side-to-side and do this!

You better jump all over those deals. Then just send them over to my house, I'll take it from there! :-laf

Serously, you should jump all over that. I wish deals like that would come my way when I have money.

I did this swap on my crewcab last winter I used a 89 for a doner truck. I thought it was a piece of cake motor sits in there like it came with a cummins. if you have a doner truck you have everything you need the motor mounts sit in the same holes the 360 did I sloted the left mount hole up abought a inch thats the way the hole was on the 89 frame. I switched windshield wiper motors the the 89 motor pointed to the right the 84 went straight down looked like it would hit motor easy swap good luck

Well, the '85 Crew Cab isnt exactly a cream puff but it does have a straight body (113k miles on it). And its a Texas truck, no rust really. I think I'm going to give it a shot. I was told you can buy Crew Cabs cheap on the GSA website (government auctions). Someone posted that in this thread earlier. I havent seen any posted yet but just found out about that website.

Dunno where you are at, but around here trucks that still have body panels at that age are a good find. Usually a truck that age will probably need floor pans, rocker panes, and box sides. If it is straight and rust free then you are way ahead of the game IMHO.

As far as the GSA Auctions, there are two listed right now in Idaho, listed under the truck, trailer and tractor section. Both are 4x4's.

I'm looking for a donor truck between 91-93 with a grey interior, since that is the color I like on the inside.

Did they end already? I just checked and there are no listing for Idaho. I looked the other day and did not see anything either and usually they run a week or so. Post up a link if you have it. Thanks.

If you use a drivers side drop t-case, you will have to move the t-case shift lever to the left side of the trans hump like a ford. Unless you want to do a ton of fab work, keep as much 1st gen stuff as possible, at least as far as the 4x4 parts are concerned.

GSA auctions

Fellas -

Below is the link I used to the GSA auction site - it's already loaded based on a keyword search of 'dodge'. The process works great - good trucks to be had. I know this because I just got back from Boise, hopefully retrieving the last parts truck I'll need for my Big Rig build.

The place where the truck was stored was a Dept of Land building with a big storage lot. It is in Boise, and there are TWO MORE crew cabs rigs there - one older, one newer, both decent, and both 4x4's.

The number for the Dept of Land shop is: (208) 334-3488 - ask for Kurt or Dan. I got my truck there yesterday morning, and spent the last two days towing it back with a custom-made tow bar I made about a year ago for a similar purpose. They're just about too larg to put on a trailer. Fun trip - 2000 miles round trip, and TJ and I did it in about 33 hours. It was especially pleasant with the portable DVD player...

That Dept of Land location may just sell those two remaining rigs without an auction - they wanted to git rid of them. I got mine for $1300 and though it was pretty beat it was pretty clean and very complete, and also rolling (the biggest blessing from above was it had 4 good tires and grease in the wheel bearings... ). It was an old Air Force truck which until recently was used in its second life serving a Fire Department.

The dodge trucks come up often, and the prices are right. Hope that all helps.

heck last week there was 2 crew cab 4x4 dodges in idaho at the same place on the goverment website! one was 1200 and the other 1300 and there were no bids on them at all if i had some way of getting them back here i would have got them!

I could go and get em one at a time, but it would have to be on a weekend, and somebody else would have to buy the fuel :-laf. I would have no problems getting one on to my trailer but two is a no go. Maybe a crew and a ram charger.

I would really love to embark on a crew like that but, I have too many irons in the fire right now, and some more to get in there already.

Oh well maybe when the kids are all grown up and move out I can afford to do one. ;)
