Truck is at dealership dead. Dealer saying ecm might be bad. I have a sick feeling it might have been my mistake of putting the two power wires on the wrong terminals. I had to disable the box to get home. After clearing codes I reinstalled box. Truck won't see the ecm now. Question,Is this a DC part or can I order one from a Cummins dealer and install myself if it isn't covered by warrenty. Dealer already questioned me about electronics being added. I removed all harnesses and box before it was towed. Antone know what the price is?

Any info would be helpful.

After reading some of the posts regarding the "Catcher" I believe that the ECM is the same for all 24V engines, the proper programing can be flashed by the dealer.

Search "Catcher" or call Bob Wagoner at 1-888-225-7637.

I've seen 2nd generation ECM on EBay, this one is for a '02 3500 A/T:

However the dealer will probably want you to buy a new one to maintain your warranty.

I think that I would call the maker of your box, they would have a great deal of expertise in this area.

the ecm are different the 24v have one i think 50 pin connector and the 03+ have a two connector ecm

This is true. The 2003-up trucks use a 2-connector ECM (one 50-pin and one 60-pin). I didn't respond to this thread earlier because I haven't a clue how much a new ECM costs or whether you can get one direct from Cummins. Although Cummins does manufacture the ECM and ship it with the engine I know it has some "special" programming feature(s) for Dodge. For example - the J1879 communications have been blocked. I don't recommend you try to buy one from Cummins. What I mean is, I'm sure they'd be able to sell you an ECM for a common rail engine, but it wouldn't be the right one for use in your Dodge.

The ECM is a dealer only part and they have to flash it with your vin info and program. I was quoted a little over 1300. 00 installed for my 04

hope everything works out

I recently had to have a new ecm put in my 04. 5. The dealer got it warranted, but the tech. said they cost $1500. Not sure what made it go bad, but they couldn't reflash it. It could have been the performance upgrade, but I'm not sure, so I won't mention which one. Needless to say it won't be going back on. ;)

Anyone have an old broken ECM they're willing to send me? I'd be interested in taking it apart, just for amusement.

Tim I am curious what the reason for your reflash was .

(you can pm me if you would rather)

Ryan I think the most amusing thing about it would be when you got it apart and wondered how on earth this thing could be worth 1500. 00

Why do they sell this for 1500. 00? Because they can.

The reason I needed a reflash, that didn't work, and then a new ecm was the truck wouldn't start. I had it loaded on a rollback and trucked to the dealer.

Tim

Thanks guys! I emailed cummins about ecm. Hope dealer will cover under warrenty but if not I'm going to try get it through cummins and have dealer install. We'll see. I'll post as drama unfolds.

How is this a D/C warranty issue?

You've got me. Spoke to Cummins. What an excellent company to deal with. They say if ECM is bad dodge has cummins calibrate it and all dealer does is install it. Man I wish I had truck delieved to cummins. Still waiting on dealers reply.

Yahoo! Truck will be back this week. Ecm has a internal failure. Cummins called back and ecm isn't their product. It's a dodge part. And not sure what your getting at hardwick. To much snow here to think straight.

I think Jeff means if you fried it by shorting out a couple pins then perhaps it shouldn't be covered by warranty. I assume that means they didn't find you specifically at fault for the failed unit...

Basically if you took a computers motherboard and folded it in half, you would see exactly what the ECM looks like. Im pretty sure Cummins is still using Motorola as there ECM supplier. They basically take a single board and bend it in half, silicone it and put the outside covering on.

Sorry this thread is going in this direction. First the two wires I put on the wrong fuse (it wasn't a switched circuit or run circuit)was to my box not the ecm. I didn't touch the ecm or it's wiring. So to me it seemed if I installed the power wires then I must have something to do with it. The reason I called cummins was to find out if I could purchase the ecm from them and save MYSELF some money. I was ready to pay for this. Dealer found it wasn't anything I did or the box did. So what some people believe is since I removed my muffler than I shouldn't have a warrenty. I haven't asked the dealer for a car to borrow or made a scene. I just lost atleast $3500 plowing. Another storm is on it's way. Oh that's right, I added a 9' plow to a 3500 DRW so that too shouldn't be covered either. Had to vent.

Let it snow. Atleast I can ride the sleds Oo.
