Marty,

Have an enjoyable trip. I wish I was going to be able to join your group in Dawson Creek on June 30 as I had planned.

Marty,

No, unfortunately I guess I can't go at all this summer. After I told you I'd have to go earlier or not at all, I made plans to leave next Monday. I serviced my truck and trailer and was all set to load my clothing and food this weekend and hit the road. Last Wednesday afternoon I got a call from a woman who owns a rental house across the street from one of mine, near Texas Tech University, asking if I was interested in buying the house from her and her husband. I ended up closing on it Monday afternoon. It is vacant and needs repainting and minor repairs so I've got to spend the month of June working to get it finished and leased. By the time I'm finished it'll be too late for the trip this year. I guess I'll have to plan on going next summer.

Maybe if your guided trip this summer is a big success, a group will be interested in going next summer.

BHarlow,

If you leave sometime in July we still have lots of good weather, fishing ect. left over. It will not be to late to come up. You just won't be with the big group that's all.

I was figuring I'd missed the trip this summer. Assuming a leisurely tourist pace, 200 or so miles each day and seeing the sights, making the trip up to Fairbanks and down to Anchorage, Valdez, etc, what would you say the latest practical date to leave Dawson Creek northbound would be? I guess I'm thinking of approximately three to four weeks from Dawson Creek back to Dawson Creek.

Or maybe another way to ask the question..... what is the latest date a tourist from West Texas should be leaving Delta Junction southbound?

Harvey, The snow usually doesn't fly until October. The fall can be beautiful. September fishing for silvers is excelent. Also, you would experience the fall colors. Come on up.

Marty,

What should day and night temperatures be in Alaska during the month of August?

What is the prime month for tourism?

Harvey

Harvey,

usually the mass exodus starts about Labour day because everyone has to go home to get the kids in school and back to work. But there is still lots of nice weather left. Like Mbaston said, snow will not fly until the middle of Oct or later. 3 to 4 weeks back to Dawson Creek is easily done. Temps in August in the evening will be in the 50's, maybe high 40's here in Fairbanks. Remember, when we are cold and snow flying, most everyone else is OK because they are south of us. If your back in Dawson Creek by the end of October you will be safe, most of the time. If you are traveling up through Alberta, the 200 miles a day might be boring. The road to Edmonton is like going through Nebraska. Flat divided 4 lane. It's when you get about 4 or 5 hundred miles north of Edmonton that the scenery gets nice. If You travel through British Columbia, be careful of the Casiar(said cas e are. the e is long) portion. If it's been raining it can filled with pot holes that slows travel to a mere crawl and can do damage. But on the other side it is beautiful. When you get here 200 miles a day is doable. But sometimes the scenery doesn't change and there isn't really anything of interest to stop for, for maybe 4 or 5 hundred miles. (in my opinion of course, which I have lived here all my life, so most of this is old hat. ) The fishing in Valdez during September is awesome for silvers and halibut. Same with Homer and Seward. You can not throw you line in without catching something.

If there is anything else I can help with PM me or write on this thread. Hope this info helps.

WDaniels,

Thanks for the detailed explanation. If all goes well with the house I'm working on I may decide to go leaving home by mid-July and arriving at Dawson Creek northbound by around July 30th.

Hey all,

My trip down was good. The highway was pretty rough through Kluane country and into Tok. The Cassiar was better than I have ever seen it.

Look forward to seeing everyone in Dawson Creek.

Marty

HI,

Folks, I am going to have to leave you in Fairbanks and not go up the haul road. I have circumstances at home I need to deal with. I will give you some tips and ideas for the trip though.

I am leaving Friday morning from California. I will not be available by email after that until I get home. You may be able to reach me by my cell phone at 907-227-5262 if needed.

See you in Dawson Creek.

Marty

Marty, et. , al,

When you reach Fairbanks look me up. I might be able to lead the crew up the Haul Road, depending on the timing.

Best of luck with the trip and drive safely.

Just to let everyone know, the group made it to Alaska. I left them in Fairbanks, they are at The River's Edge RV park off Sportsman road. I will re-connect with them in a week.

Trip went well. Saw many bears, sheep and other critters. I lost two wheel bearings on my trailer and others had a few minor issues but nothing major. Weather was not cooperative but this is the north country. Brutus has been taking many photos and will share once he has them all compiled. We were such a nice group we even welcomed a duramax to join us. Hey, at least it wasn't a gasser.

Look for the pictures soon.
