Off Roading drop pitman

Hi guys.

This spring I will be sled pulling for the first time with my new-to-me 03' QC SB NV 5600 4. 10 anti-spin truck. It will be at a local track i have pulled at before with my last truck, 2000 ford 7. 3 6 speed, 3. 73 chip, exaust, intake, clutch. With that truck i used 4 lo and second gear. I have a few questions about pulling with the dodge, these are my mods: Tst PMCR R-49 with pressure and adjustable programs, 4" mbrp exuast, 392 glacier diesel fuel system with bigline kit regulater shimmed to 26 psi. modified stock air box with amsoil filter. Stock turbo, sticks and clutch. My questions are: what gear selection should i use, i was thinking 4 lo and 3rd or 4th?? Will the stock turbo light fast enough to limit the amount i will have to slip the clutch? should i try and come out of the hole really soft and limit tire spin, or get the wheel speed up quik? The track is medium-packed loam and clay mix and back-bladed by a loader after every run. I will be running cooper ATR 285/70-17 tires as the last three years" winners have all had these tires on thier trucks. The winners were a 02 d-max/allison twice and an 05 dodge qc sb with an edge attitude/juice and a2 moniter. This is a street driven class limited to 30 inch hitch hight and 8000lbs, single turbo, 14,000 pound sled in the first round. I thanks everyone for their help in advance, any opinions are welcome as well as further upgardes i might want to do. thanks again. Steve

30" hitch height???

That's the highest I've ever heard. Did you mean 20"?

If you slip a stock single-disk clutch far enough to not break the wheels loose, it ain't gonna be long for this world...

Steve,

Have you thought about getting a clutch that will handle the sledpulling? I havent seen a common rail yet that hasnt slipped a stock clutch while attempting to sledpull.

If you do end up pulling with the stock clutch go for 3rd gear lo range. Make the right choice and get a clutch then you can run 4th lo or 2nd hi (or even 5th sometimes when the moon and stars align).

our local rules say 26" hitch height, and all but farm stock class have to have break away air cutoffs.
I wonder how bad 4th or 2nd high would be on a Con FE single disk SB clutch?

I tried to pull 4th 4lo a few times with single discs with no luck, my con ofe barely moved the truck and barely made it home, and my con fe did it once but slipped badly and glazed itself and didn't last long afterwards and both destroyed my flywheel. 3rd 4lo is the only way to pull a single, I made several pulls in that gear, but even in third the singles slipped more than I liked and had limited lives, and this was when my truck had way less mods and I pulled in the street stock class. If you're gonna pull a double disc is the only possible solution I think. Peter at south bend clutch will agree trust me lol. I got the street twin disc setup with 3600# plate load and pulled in 4th 4 low with no slip felt whatsoever, with the current mods I have. I'm Bonn attempt to pull in 5th this year and hope it holds. My truck does have 3. 55 gears in it tho, so if you had 4. 10's, you might be able to push a con fe single disc in 4th a couple times if you slip it as little as possible. The guys that win round here pull 5th with 4. 10's so I'm gonna try to get an edge on em n try 5th with my 3. 55's this year. But in a street stock truck you won't have enough power for that. Actually I always wanted to build a street stock truck with a double disc and all the mods I could legally get by with and run 4th cause idk anyone in that class that runs more than 3rd, and most have stock clutches as it is. I managed one street stock win by pulling 4th but it wasn't worth changing clutches and flywheel afterwards lol. Anyway tho, I highly do not reccomend 4th with a single disc, but if you have 4. 10 gearing, you might be able to push it a few times, but youll still have a very limited clutch life. If you talk to the guys at south bend and mention sled pulling in the least, they'll push you to a double disc, they acted like I was insane when I mentioned I pulled with a single lol.
