I'll have to say I'm with Yogi, an 03 HO, not a 600, (although, with the box it's close), 135,500 miles and very few problems, certainly nothing needing a buy back.

Seems to me he is trying to sell you a GM truck since this is what he sells. And I can say this,I live in Flint were the GM trucks are built and I can tell you this,GM has been buying quite a few trucks back lately ,sure there is problems with all three trucks, but I believe the Dodge is by far a better choice,I am sure Dodge has bought back some trucks, but Ford and Chevy do too.

You should ask him to show you the paperwork on one of the "buy back" trucks. If he were to sell you one, he would have to tell you it was a buyback.

It's possible they are, but highly unlikely. Unless DC is sending every vehicle it has to buyback to this one dealer, that might be believable. The only manufacturer who has had noticable buyback issues is Ford, and I can believe a sizable Ford dealer would have 1 or 2 buyback vehicles on their lot.

I would reconsider waiting too. Right now there are huge rebates on GM and Dodge trucks. You aren't likely to see rebates like this on '05's unless it's the end of the model year next June-July or you can wait to see what GM does to the Duramax and see what DC offers on the Cummins for '05. I doubt there will be any drastic changes.

Buying the one that appeals to you most and your satisfied with. For performance and reliability, it'll be a Cummins.

Think the dealership and salesman I bought my truck from are up front, but as a general rule salespersons will tell you anything to make a sale. Personally, I would like to see the GM buy back site and especially the F*** buy back site. Bet those are a mile long. I think it odd that I have been reading this site for a number of years and this is the first I have heard of a DC buy back site; sure it's available only to dealers. Have heard or read that F*** has gone to great lenghts to keep the number of buy backs a closely held number and that policy would make sense if I worked for F***. Can you imagine the fun some persons would have if they knew the actual number of buy backs a manufacturer had. Five or six a week sounds way out of line to me considering the number of problems we have seen here as most problems certainly do not reach the level of buy back. Wonder if the site wasn't one that listed repossessions that DC had to take back.

ford

I don't know about GM but Ford has bought back more trucks than they care to admit, check the Ford site,I would hate to be a Ford Truck dealer today, they have alot of unhappy customers with the 6. 0. Thje main reason I own a Dodge is the Cummins engine!I still have a VERY BAD taste in my mouth from GM diesels from the late 70's. Get me once same on you,get me twice same on me!!!!!

I would not put much stock in what a GM dealer had to say about Dodges (or vice versa). I have never heard my dealer bash another brand and that is to their credit. I would take any information from a rival dealer with a grain of salt and throw it out with the rest of the garbage.

you're gonna buy what you're gonna buy, but i believe the overwhelming recommendation you are going to get from this site is "buy the cummins". the furd and cheby sites will have their own bias.

personnally, i can't believe any of the manufacturers would sell off their "defects". they already have at least one person that hates their product (the original owner) and then they are going to re-sell it and have another unhappy person??? i thought they scraped them or sold them as salvage and took a tax writeoff.

I can only say that we had 2 GMCs both 4x4 ('97 and '99). Problems with both. Can to our senses, did a lot of research and bought a 2004. 5 Ram 325/600 4x4.

Not a PEEP of a problem. Pleasure to drive... can't stay out of it.

Last fillup for the GMC (gas) netted 11. 5 mpg mixed driving. Our 600, after only 3500 miles has not gotten less than 19 mpg mixed driving last 2 tankfuls (calculated via an XCel spreadsheet... my math is terrible).

Also if you offroad, look at the rear of a GMC as opposed to a Ram. The Ram doesn't have brake lines and shocks running below the level of the axle.

They could be the paint units that did not pass the test this spring. They were all repaired and sent to auction.

The Jeep dealer in our town sells GM trucks instead of Dodge. Because of his Jeep dealership he watches the Chrysler dealer auctions every week to pick up used automobiles to sell at his dealership. And he tells me that there are 5 to 6 Cummins 600 powered Dodge trucks per week that are on the auction block from Chrysler because they have been "bought back" due to early engine failure. I have looked through this site for any threads related to early engine failure, but have not seen any. So is there this big of a problem with the 600 HO engines in these trucks?

Any input on this would be really helpfull. I am in the process of deciding between an '05 GMC Sierra with the Duramax/Allison drivetrain, vs an '05 Dodge with the Cummins 600 / 48RE drivetrain. I have driven both trucks and it looks like six of one vs half a dozen of the other to me at this point. I like the looks of the Dodge better, I like the look of the leather seats in the Dodge better, and I like the dash in the Dodge better. But the GMC seats are more comfortable, and the GMC definitely feels more powerfull (unloaded), compared to the rather sluggish feeling Dodge.

Thanks in advance for your responses.

I can tell you for a fact that guy is nuts. I work at one of the largest auctions in the country and that has not happened. My blood pressure is up so I'm gonna sign off on that note.

Well thanks for the information everyone. I thought that whole "buy back" issue was BS from the start. And I still think the new Dodge 3500 is the best looking truck on the road, with the most durable drivetrain, ... but ...

I ordered an '05 Sierra 3500 crew cab 4x4. I think these two trucks are close to equal, overall, with some features better on one truck, and some features better on the other (I've owned both). The difference for me was cost, and nothing more than that. I went to the GMC dealer first, and got a price for my trade in, and a quote of $4500 off retail on the '05 GMC. I then went to the Dodge dealer, and he offered me $1000 less for my trade in, and wanted full list price for his '05 truck, "because he was giving me such a good price for my trade in", even though he knew the price the GMC dealer had quoted me. So even without any rebates that may or may not be available when the truck shows up, that is a $5500 better deal on the GMC. Considering that I only keep a truck for about 36,000 miles, I didn't think the Cummins "reliability" was worth the extra $5500 over the Duramax. In two to three years I will be shopping again, maybe the tables will be turned next time around.

Thanks again for all of your responses.

Should of sold your truck for Cash and talked to Big Bob or Tommygun they would set you up, infact you probably would have 2-3K more in your pocket than your deal netted... .....

Yah, what ttreibel said. AND you would not have to trade in 3 years... or 4... . or 5... or 6..... or 7..... or ... ... George
