I think an automated manual transmission, like what is in newer semis, would be the best of both worlds for the new Rams. Would be alot better than an slush box. Would have the mechanical reliability of a manual without having to shift manually (with needing to push in the clutch pedal), but would have the ability of shifting all gears "manually".

There are 2 and 3 pedal versions of those trannys. 2 pedal w/ tc and the 3 pedal with a clutch.

Could be possibly a little bit cost prohibitive though. If I remember right, the ones in the big trucks cost about 6k more than a standard manual transmission.

Just a thought.

Before we celebrate our mighty victory in the power war I want to let everyone in on a little secret. The GM boy's are releasing a new Duramax for the first of the year. It is suppose to have redesigned heads, injection system, and VGT. The press release for this engine should be in a week or so.

Remember what ford did last year, they waited until after Dodge released the #'s for the new HO Cummins and then they came out with higher #'s for the 6. 0 Powerjoke. GM may try and do the same thing with their new engine.

cummins 600 vs Chevy

Chevy already announced their numbers on the new Duramax.

310 hp, 580 tq -auto only, 565 tq on the manual.

Cummins takes the lead.

Considering Ford is having trouble just getting the 6. 0 to work as advertised I think Dodge will keep the lead, until next year anyways. ;)

Steve

I took a 98. 5 24 valve for a drive and didn't look at another new Dodge since.

I may go test drive this one, just to keep them honest!:D

This is interesting because Ford and GM use the same ZF 6-speed manual. If Ford is at 560 and GM won't go past 565, that tells me they have an inferior trans to the NV5600. Not to mention, GM is always pushing the Allison in commercials and print ads.

This is great news!

- 1) finally the death of the SO and the 50 state availability of the HO (or 600!)

- 2) finally Dodge/Cummins takes the lead (for now anyways!) in the horsepower race. We all know the 5. 9 is a far better engine than the competition, but there are alot of consumers who aren't so educated:D This should help increase DC's sales.

- 3) Looks like across the board approvals for exhaust brakes!!

I don't regret just buying my '03 HO as the power difference isn't overly significant and I was concerned about getting EGR. Time will tell if I live to regret the decision. As KC said, the owners of earlier stock trucks will really notice a big difference.

My crystal ball says; transmission still a 48RE, and no major internal changes to the 5. 9!

Ken, is it time for you to order yet?;) 4x4 or 4x2?

Dave

It will be a 4x4, ... I think. Waiting till after the 1st of the year to hear more about the engine and also for personal reasons.

I did not realize that GM released the the numbers for the new D-Max. I have been lurking around the Dieselpage and the Dieselplace recently and I never saw any numbers posted, just a lot of talk and anticipation. It seem's the GM boy's don't keep their pages as up to date with info as we do.

I too have been waiting for this news. I'm ordering a one ton

dually 4 by 4 Laramie loaded. I live in the Chicago area. Are dealers taking orders now? I'd appriciate the info, thanks.

20041/2 Dodge Ram Heavy Duty Cummins '600' Powers Past the Competition With the Strongest Heavy-Duty Pickup Ever

Wednesday December 3, 12:14 pm ET

- New High Output Cummins "600" Turbo Diesel Produces Class-Dominating 600 lb. -ft. of torque - New Engine Tougher, Quieter and Meets 50-state Emissions Requirements - Best-in-class Towing, GCWR and GVWR

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. , Dec. 3 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Dodge, the brand that revolutionized the diesel pickup market when it launched the state-of- the-art 1989 Dodge Ram Cummins Turbo Diesel, announced today the 20041/2 Dodge Ram Heavy Duty Cummins "600" with a class-dominating 600 lb. -ft. of torque at 1,600 rpm and 325 horsepower at 2,900 rpm. Equipped with the new Cummins "600," the Dodge Ram Heavy Duty takes its position at the head of the heavy- duty pickup segment.

Domination Across the Board

"The Dodge Ram dominates in every category," said Darryl Jackson, Vice President, Dodge Marketing, Chrysler Group. "With the new Ram Heavy Duty Cummins "600," the Ram family of trucks now includes the strongest heavy-duty pickup available, the fastest production pickup with the 150 mph Dodge Ram SRT-10, and the most powerful, mass-produced light-duty pickup, the HEMI- powered Dodge Ram 1500. This is an exciting time for Dodge. "

In addition to the most torque ever available in a production heavy-duty pickup, the Dodge Ram Heavy Duty Cummins "600" boasts best-in-class towing capability of 16,400 lbs. (a 3,000 lb. advantage over the Ford F-350 PowerStroke®), a payload of 5,020 lbs. and a best-in-class Gross Combined Weight Rating (GCWR) and Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of 23,000 lbs. and 12,000 lbs. , respectively. Additionally, the new Cummins "600" generates its peak torque of 600 lb. -ft. at 1,600 rpm, earlier than either Ford's PowerStroke or Chevrolet's Duramax® diesels. The new Cummins "600" delivers an 80 lb. -ft. torque and 25 horsepower advantage over Chevrolet Duramax and is priced just $135 more than the previous Cummins High Output Turbo Diesel. The Standard Output Cummins Turbo Diesel is dropped from the Ram Heavy Duty line- up.

"The Ram Heavy Duty has the most sophisticated chassis in the segment, the biggest brakes, excellent handling and class-exclusive safety features such as side curtain air bags," said Eric Ridenour, Executive Vice President Product Development. "It is only fitting that it now has the most powerful diesel engine. This is also the quietest Ram diesel ever and the first High Output Cummins Turbo Diesel that meets 50-state emissions requirements. "

Do More, Get the Job Done

The names Dodge Ram and Cummins are synonymous with power, durability and quality. All are characteristics that made the Dodge Ram Heavy Duty Motor Trend's 2003 Truck of the Year and merited a best-in-class rating for the Cummins-powered Dodge Ram Heavy Duty in the J. D. Powers 2003 Initial Quality Survey, surpassing both Ford PowerStroke and Chevrolet Duramax.

With real-world customers in mind, the re-designed 5. 9-liter Cummins "600" powerplant not only meets 50-state emissions requirements, but was designed to be even tougher with premium exhaust valves and seats, high-strength exhaust manifolds, gallery cooled pistons and an oil bath turbo system.

Built for high-mileage customers who need the most capability available, the new Cummins "600" delivers best-in-class oil change intervals of 15,000 miles (versus 7,500 for the competition) and is the only heavy-duty diesel pickup pre-equipped for an exhaust brake. The Ram Heavy Duty Cummins "600" is also capable of zero-throttle launches, enabling smooth drive-offs under load with the 6-speed manual transmission. An automatic transmission is also available with the new Cummins "600. "

"Our goal during the development of the Cummins '600' was to make meaningful changes, not just chase numbers," said Frank Klegon, Vice President, Truck Product Team. "The Ram Heavy Duty Cummins '600' delivers more torque and power where our customer needs it, under a full load and heading up a steep grade. We designed the Ram Heavy Duty Cummins '600' for the severe use customer, and for them, torque is everything. Dodge is also the only heavy-duty pickup manufacturer confident enough in our product to offer a seven year, 100,000 mile powertrain warranty. "

The Dodge Ram Heavy Duty is built in Saltillo, Mexico.

DuraMax Numbers

I saw on the Diesel-Stop (Ford Forums) that the DMax will be limited in HP in 1st and High gear. Limiting in 1st gear makes sense for drivability purposes, limiting in high gear is probably to help keep the engine alive. Putting it to the coals with 310hp for any length of time must be pusing the safety envelope of the engine, at least the durability/lifespan of it.

I think the enthusiasm over the news is great

Total of 3440 hits between this thread and the one in the other forum (3G No Drivetrain).

I'm pretty happy with my stock 305 Cummins, with 4" exhaust and better air filter and almost 19,000 miles now it's running very very well and after coming away from a 2001 with DD2s and van Aaken box, this truck feels quite strong without any box! I took a coworker for a ride in mine who has a new DMax and when I punched it on the highway he says "Wow mine doesn't pull like that! Is yours chipped??" :D

DAMM!!!!!!!

I thought it was the debut of the new Cummins "Signature" 600 in the new Ram!!!!

I hate these "... I got 10 hp and 15 lb trq more than you ... " whiny little one-ups-menship crap.

They should be saying in the article:

"... yes, we increased the torque from 555 to 2050 ft lbs and the hp form 305 to 600. The new ram will come in a 60K or 80K GVW configurations and the new 3500 EX will be at 100K GVW. We think this will heat up the competition with Ford and Chevy... ".

Now that would be more like a article that would get me all excited. ;)

Ya gotta keep in mind Dodge is making 10hp & 15 Ft lbs torque more than the competition w/ 2 less cylinders. That speaks volumes on the efficiency of the B5. 9.

CUMMINS INC. NEXT GENERATION TURBO DIESEL SUPPLIES THE POWER FOR 2004 1/2 DODGE RAM HEAVY DUTY PICKUP

For Immediate Release

Columbus, IN - 4 Dec 2003

COLUMBUS, IN -- Cummins Inc. (NYSE:CUM) announced today that its next-generation turbo diesel engine will be supplying the power to the 2004½ model year Dodge Ram Heavy Duty pickup, launching in January 2004.

The re-engineered Cummins 5. 9-liter diesel engine builds on the power and quality of the 2003 model year engine that helped make the Dodge Ram Motor Trend magazine’s “Truck of the Year. ” The Cummins engine for the Dodge Ram also merited a best-in-class rating in the J. D. Power 2003 Initial Quality Survey.

The newest Dodge Ram Heavy Duty pickup offers best-in-class 600 lb-ft of torque and 325 horsepower, making it the most powerful and capable heavy-duty pickup truck on the market. It was built with the most severe-use customer in mind, delivering maximum torque when drivers need it most.

In addition to offering class-leading towing capability of 16,400 pounds and a payload capacity of 5,020 pounds, the Cummins engine is the quietest Ram diesel ever made. It also is the first High Output Cummins turbo diesel to meet emission requirements in all 50 states.

“We are excited to supply this engine for the new Dodge Ram,” said Joe Loughrey, Cummins President – Engine Business. “We have built upon the proven performance and reliability of our previous engine, and engineered the new Cummins turbo diesel to provide more power and torque with reduced noise, while meeting tougher emissions standards. We think our customers will love the new Dodge – Cummins package. ”

The launch of the 2004½ Dodge Ram is the latest collaboration between the two companies, which have been partners since 1988 when Dodge first offered the Cummins engine option. Earlier this year, Cummins celebrated production of the one-millionth Dodge Ram engine, which is made at the Company’s Walesboro, IN, facility.

In October the Company announced the extension of its agreement as the exclusive supplier of diesel engines for the Dodge Ram. The agreement also includes consideration of Cummins as a supplier for the diesel engine after treatment system, which would be provided by Fleetguard, a wholly-owned Cummins business unit.

Cummins Inc. , a global power leader, is a corporation of complementary business units that design, manufacture, distribute and service engines and related technologies, including fuel systems, controls, air handling, filtration, emission solutions and electrical power generation systems. Headquartered in Columbus, Indiana, (USA) Cummins serves its customers through more than 500 company-owned and independent distributor locations in 131 countries and territories.
