I pulled our 2,000 pound Coleman camper along with 1,500 pounds of cargo in the bed from Denver, Colorado, to Dorris, California (21 miles south of Klamath Falls, Oregon, on Highway 97). We took I-70 which took us over 2 10,000' passes in Colorado and never had to get out of 6th gear. We unloaded our cargo in Dorris and then headed for Bandon, Oregon, and spent an awe inspiring week on the coast.
The Y2K Dodge Cummins performed flawlessly for the whole trip. We drove a total of 3,537 miles and used a total of 196. 276 gallons of diesel. The calculator tells me I averaged 18. 02 MPG. My trip computer told me I was getting 17. 9 MPG - that's a variation of only 0. 12 which I find quite acceptable. Fuel prices varied from $1. 45. 9 - $1. 63. 9 for a high.
I talked to a number of Cummins owners who were pulling various configurations but one thing was common among them: they loved their Dodge diesels.

Areon,

Did you come down US101 into CA and see some of our big trees?

Joe G,
No, we didn't go that far down on Highway 101. I have never seen the redwoods, but maybe we can do that on our next trip into California.

This is running empty for a Cummins!
I bet you could not even tell that you had a trailer behind you. except the fact it rode better with the 1500 lbs cargo.

JJY2K,
I have the same truck as you only 5-speed. I pulled my 3000 lb. coleman around the southeast here and my mileage dropped to around 14. 5 mpg. Empty and not towing, I get 18. 5 mpg. Does anyone think this is not right?
I always use a calculator to figure mileage.

I also just got back after pulling a 2000lbs popup trailer and I averaged 18. 5 mpg's. On my 99 qc 4x4 extended quadcab 2500 35x12. 50x16. 5 tires.

This may get me in trouble BUT you did mention it -- isn't Bandon a wonderful place? I assume you stayed at Bullards Beach state Park! My first 2nd generation truck (a '96) got there once or twice a year. The new (01) hasn't made it yet but probably will in August -- great place to fly stunt kites.

Nelson,
We did not stay at Bullards Beach State Park. I didn't know about it. We stayed at Sunset Beach State Park which is approximately 25 miles north of Bandon and drove to the Bandon area every day. The next time we go we will without doubt stay at Bullards. We loved the beach there and we were practically the only ones on the beach at the time.
