Where is the Communication port for the Cummins ECM. I guessing that the dealer is using the under the dash connector, but what are the Cummins dealers usings.

I am downloading the Diagnotic Scan Tool program to my computer and would like to be able to hook up to my truck using my lap-top. I already have a PDM box, but I dont know if I have the correct connectors to communicate with the Cummins ECM.

Thanks for any info. .

Bryan

There is a three prong femal plug that has a dummy plug in it down by the fuel filter. Actually there are a couple of places I have seen this connector. Since you have an 01. 5 I would look right around the motor mount on the drivers side to start. If not there look around the fuel filter. It will be a flat three prong female connection with a dummy plug in its place. Thats the data port.

kat. . Ok. . I know where that connector is. . I was looking for a different type of connection. . I guess that is the only one. . My PDM (Parrallel Data Module) has a round 6 or 7 pin connector. . but 2 of the connections are for power and ground for the PDM box. . I'm afraid my PDM box is too different to communicate with the Cummins ECM, but going to try it. . I guess I'll have to look for a wire diagram of my PDM box and the communication port on the truck and build an adpater... Thanks

Bryan

Actually I have about 4 different ends for my PDM box. . but none match the small plug next to the pump. . the 6-7 is just more common. .

To communicate directly with the Cummins ECM (silver box attached to the engine block in front of the lift pump) you will need an Inline II adapter and Insite . The ECM uses the SAE J1939 protocol (29 bit) to communicate with the injector pump etc. The Inline II adapter has its own incryption algorithm that is Copyrighted by Cummins.

The three prong plug that KatDiesel is referring to is the Datalink connector that allows you to retrieve data from the CAN Bus

The scan tools use the OBDII data port that is below the steering wheel. This is the one you need to use.
