Rated Speed?

Looking at buying a wrecked '89 4X4

I was just looking at Fords commercial vehicle webpage and noticed something interesting. In the F-750 the most powerful offering with the 6. 0 liter P. S. D is listed as 230 H. P and 620 lb ft. the most powerful Cummins offered is listed as 260 H. P and 660 lb ft. That ought have the Ford fans gnashing their teeth. Both of them. (sorry couldn't resist:)

must be a typo. the 6. 0 is to be rated at 320 isn't it? thats what they are claiming in the trucks

In the F-250/F-350, yes. Claiming most HP gets you buyers, but for the large commercial trucks it's not really about power. Look at the specs of a T444E in an International, the one I looked at was spec'd at 180hp (couple of years ago). Weird, huh? You'd think the larger trucks would get more power. :D

Horsepower is a poor unit of measure to pay attention to in a work truck. It's really all about the torque.

They talk about horsepower all the time in general consumer advertisements because the average consumer doesn't even know what the word torque means, and also because the mere mention of "horsepower" brings to mind images of NASCAR and NHRA race cars.

Larger trucks need torque, that is why these same engine give more torque than there light duty counter parts.

Still seems like a typo. The f series is 320/620 and they are claiming 230/620. why give up hp and keep torque? I agree the big trucks need the torque, just I still think it is a typo.

Thats a good point. Never really thought of that. Since they had 230 on the big trucks and 320 on the lil trucks, it just seems like someone transposed the numbers. I definitely agree that most guys are looking to buy the most powerful truck and if uneducated the first thing they look at is HP ratings.

Smart marketing trick that really seems to work. Made me look at a new HO the other rmonth. :D

Its also about longevity,in a pickup these engines are loafing for the most part, only a few are towing upwards of 30K GVWR all the time. In an F750 the truck is sitting at 15K dry with a huge frontal area, and they run 30K-35K most of the time,if they arent overloaded, then some guys tow 20-30K trailers with them too,so these engines will not last like they do in a pickup. They may be running at 50KGVWR+ for days on end ,wide open. I drove MD trucks for a little while,it has been my experience that you literally are flatfooted 90% of the time. We ran our 35K GVWR F800 Ford (3208 CAT)wide open all the time, and we loaded it to 40K constantly. I also towed an excavator with it,on a 15 ton trailer,so these trucks take a lot more of a beating than our pickups do,IMO. So these engines need to be detuned a bit to last with foot to floor all the time. In addition, the biggier engines wouldnt sell as well if the smaller ones made the same power, were cheaper, and the truck could carry more weight because of the lighter engine.
