Last year, 2011 with 183k miles, my OE injectors finally gave up. I was lucky enough to be towing our 36' 5er and 2000 miles away from home when it happened.

Prior to the vacation, my truck would randomly start rough, idle rough and belch a little bit of white smoke. Then it wouldn't do that for weeks. While on the road, it would do the above one day, then be fine the next. Finally, they blew. No codes, nothing. Just me looking like a tard, blowing an enormous cloud of white smoke with engine doing the shake and bake.

At the time, the were NO new Bosch injectors availible so I had to settle for Cummins re-man's. I was able to get em installed the next day, which was nice. I paid more for the remans and labor than new ones would have cost and I also could have installed the darn theings myself.

Fast forward a year and my truck is starting to mimmick last years woes. As I write this, my truck has been sitting at a Cummins service center for 7 days. I just got off the phone with them and they tell me that nothing is wrong so I'm guessing that my truck isn't in the mood to act up during startup.

Knowing my luck, all will be fine untill June 18th and I'll find myself forking out $1000's to replace my Cummins re-mans. #@$%!

Edit: Aren't your injectors, no older than that covered by a Cummins reman warranty?

I have been reading/hearing for several years, perhaps longer, that new Bosch injectors were not available in the supply system. I have not tried to buy any so can't confirm or deny.

Recently TDR member cerberusiam was offering advice on diagnosis and correction of an engine problem in a thread and I asked him what would he do? He said he would contact TDR member Todd @ TC Diesel and buy a set of six injectors.

I emailed Todd and he sent me back a price. I saved his reply but can't locate it right now. I think he said they were new ones and the price sounded reasonable to me. You might try emailing or pm'ing him to ask about injectors.

Thanks for the head up HB.

I just might do that if the re-mans do fail, which I think they are.

I recieved a 1 year warranty from date of purchase.

Unless it breaks to where it is obvious like before, good luck talking thr service cente rinto warranty. Then likely it will only be on the one they can determine bad and the next one in line will die on the road.

It is unfortunate that the only choice is $400 a piece new injectors to have some peace of mind, but, unless you want a ruined vacation thats where you are.

Call TCDiesel and get a new set so you can enjoy your vacation.

Not many of us have been happy with the Cummins reman crd injectors... ... ...

That is a HUGE understatement... ... .

Won't be able to take another vacation like we did last year (30 days of traveling) after I get to buy another set of injectors this year.

I'm just glad this is happening at home this time around... .

Cummins charged me $412 for injector test

Brought my truck today. They charged me over $400 to check injectors. All they did was plug each line. They didn't have the software or scan tool to diagnose the 5. 9 injectors even though they told me upfront they could do the work.

I feel like they broke it off on my rear #@$%!

So now, I'll have to spend more money with someone who have the correct tools.

So they didn't come to any conclusions after their "test".

They told me the injectors were okay. I thought the fuel line plug test only determines which injector has failed. I don't have failure yet as I'd never driven the truck to the service center in the first place.

I was charged a lot of money for a test that I can do in my own shop. But since this is a possible warranty issue, they have to diagnose. They said they had the equipment to test but they didn't.

Am I correct that it was a Cummins dealer that you took it to?

A scanner is not needed to test injector return if they did test the return.

Yes it was Cummins West, Fresno. As I understand, isolating the injector simply tells if the injector is working or not; It either is or isn't. What about load testing? What about... ... ..... ?

The Cummins shop in Cody, Wy has been supportive with this. They advised me to have the truck scanned. This is why I went to Cummins in the first place. They contacted the Ca branch to verfify installment date etc and gave me full confidence that I was in the right spot.

I know the Dodge dealer can scan but I'm over 200k so I rarely use the dealer for anything after the factory warranty is gone. I'll call the diesel guy at Dodge in the morning and see what he has to say. He started and operated his own shop for years before selling and taking a much simpler 9 to 5 with Dodge.

Thanks Bob

The scanner testing will give a hint if it is way off but should not be used to condem. They may have done return flow testing one injector being removed at a time from the loop. Good luck

From my understanding very few Cummins dealers bought the licensing for the 5. 9 Dodge app.

That is what I am beginning to understand as well.

Just so I can understand and maybe advise a little... .

You purchased ReMan or ReCon injectors from Cummins in Cody, WY less than a year ago. They installed them for you at their facility.

You now think that one or more injectors are failing.

You were assured by the Cummins facility in Fresno that they would be able to test your injectors and confirm or deny injector failure on that Dodge.

You take the truck there and they did not find a failure with the block off test.

Then they billed you $400. 00 as no failure was found.

Was it skipping when you took it in??

Did they start a warranty repair order and call RapidServe for instructions??

It may benefit you to get a scan using the Dodge dealer only to get a print out if it will show any injector malfunctions, that would present your case a lot better.

Then you could lug the print out back to Cummins in Fresno for them to present to RapidServe to get warranty going.

Off the record, not knowing the full story and all, I am a little stunned at the $400. 00 bill unless the truck was not skipping and even given that it seems a little off track to me.
