I want to replace da muffler with a straight thru type when I replace da cat with test pipe from the dealer. Will I increase mileage by doing this? What is a great straight thru muffler that gives me everything? Can I get it in Oregon locally?

I don't think I noticed any better mileage when the CAT got the axe. Makes sense as the flow thru the system just isn't that great while running 'normal'. I'm sure that while running under BOMBed fuel & boost conditions the reduced backpressure gives better numbers.

I'd go for the 4" system from the CAT test pipe back, with a straight thru 4" muffler with perforations into the baffling. You'll like the sound better. The old glass pack types had those ridges in the flow that were more restrictive than a turbo muffler. #ad
The body of my 4" muffler is 12" long & sounds good. #ad

Money Sink - 96, 5 speed, TST #11/280 slid to 340 position + Injectors.
4" CAT back & CATless, 4" chrome turn down straight out back.
Stand back & listen to the turbo whine :-}~

Had the same question and found my milage to improve at 2. 5 mpg, no load running empty. Stephen's 95 won ton dually in Sanger CA.

Forgot to mention I stayed with the 3 inch exhaust pipe because the benefits of a 4 inch pipe wasn't there. Most muffuler shops can work with and stock 3 inch material thus cheaper. To go 4 inch you still have a 3 inch restriction at the tubro and special orders of a 4 inch means special prices. Stephen's won ton dually in Sanger CA.

I have been using an Allied 7880-30 from portland on a lot of trucks. It is a 8" round with perforations inside facing one direction so you can install either direction depending on how much noise you want. I install muffler and pipe for $125. Muffler is $75 cash and carry.

My mileage has improved. Throttle responce is wonderful. EGT is lower. Ehaust is louder.
I garentee your kitty will eventually get constipated so get rid of it.
