My manual lists my 2500 as having a DANA 60F front axle, and DANA 80 rear. I think the plate on the door lists the front axle weight rating as higher than 4,300. How would that be possible? I may be remembering the numbers wrong. I will look when I go home from work and update this post tomarrow if this still is questionable.
Other note, if the back axle itself is rated for 11,500 lbs then why is the truck rated for a max of 8800 with both axles combined?
Because the rear axle assy - housing, shafts, brakes - is not the weak link in the system. You've got the frame - rails, spring hangers, etc - and the springs to deal with as well.
The axles avalible from DANA and the axles on our trucks are not the same. Dodge has dana build axles to their specs. For example our 60f in the dodge has 44 axle shafts and the 80 rear is just an 80 center with 70 ends. A "real" dana 80 is a very different axle. I believe the front axle that Dave Fritz put in his truck from Dynatrack is a full 60. BTW dyna trac actually is not a dana axle they produce their own housings.
