My daughter has had a good high school track career as a sprinter in that she has made it to the state finals every year in at least one event. Last year ,she also ran cross country and made it to state in the 5K. Some of the coaches that were recruiting her for college really were not all that hot on her running XC in that it can sometimes lead to lengthening the short muscle fibers that give sprinters their quickness out of the blocks. Fortunately, there is a strength and speed rehab clinic located close to us that does training and rehab work for clients that include Ohio State University and the Cinn Bengals. Several really goofy looking excercises are combined with a super treadmill capable of 24MPH speeds and a 35 degree incline.

As part of the evaluation process, your best speed is recorded for a six second burst when you jump on and run free of hanging on to anything. She set a new female record on the beast at 20 miles an hour. Oo. Oo.

If this pays off for her like I hope it will, it may be a fun track season

Out of the Blue

Last night we were at the district final basketball game and the track coach waves me over and just dropped a bomb right out of the sky. It seems he had just gotten a call from a Division I college and they want to offer her a full college scholarship. I know this is a great problem to have, especially since we are not made of money. We are gonna give this a lot of thought and prayer in the coming weeks. It really came as a shock to us that her quarter mile time was so quick until I started to research It seems that we are in a very competetive area. A couple of the girls she has been running against are so incredibly fast that we did not realize how good a third place finish really is when you compare it to other areas around the country.

We are trying to stay grounded in this whole experience. After all, college choice is about the best education that you can get that fits the goals of your child. We have been shopping ,interviewing, visiting, and looking at financing options almost every weekend for three months now. While getting a ''full ride'' is something to brag to your buddies about. we are not going to tell anyone untill she makes her decision or unless the news leaks out from school.

You guys are the only ones that know. ;)

What's her best time in the quarter Dave? Your daughter has been blessed with some great abilities and some awesome opportunities as well.

Her best time in the quarter is 57. 32. I looked up the state records for Div. I,II,III schools in Ohio last year, and that puts her 7th for all divisions in the state. She ran a 56. 9 split in the 4x400 not much more than an hour later the same day at State Championships.

There are always a few girls that can run a 55,and when you see what it takes to shave even a half second off a race like this,it makes you think 57 ain't all that fast. From a small school like ours that has no weight training program for sprinters, she well could have more potential with the right science applied to coaching.

What I have recently figured out is that when you use the internet time machine and look at the top tier college runners is that her high school time is as good or better than some of their times. The reason that she is so recruitable is not because she is better athletically than many others running events other than the quarter, but because you need FOUR quarter milers to run the 4x4 relay, which is one of the more exciting events at a track meet, and there is always gonna be a high demand for kids like her ,once you see how many colleges need them.

Dave,

That's really amazing for a female. Heck, I thought I was flying when I ran 54s in HS. Now, you gotta be in the 50-51 range to compete.

If you recall from the last Olympics, many of THOSE females were not breaking 55 by a great margin. I think they were mostly in the 49-50 range. Wasn't the Gold Medal time a 48. xx??

Your daughter is DERN fast, so I hope this goes well for her; she's obviously worked very hard.

Her time is quick enough to win state here in Texas most years in the 400 meter dash, I bet there are a bunch of girls in Ohio that hate to see her show up at a meet :D

Track was so much fun back in high school, it was interesting to run across those people who were truly a step above the normal realm of capability and think  . We had a kid in our district that ran a 48-second quarter mile, we thought no one could possibly beat him but he never won state (the top times are usually 46 - 47). At one track meet, after the dust had settled, a couple of our guys raced him on 10-speed bikes... . and he still clobbered 'em, laughing all the way. Just amazing.

Dave,

Holy Mackerel

Your daughter is one fast runner. Michael Johnson ran about 23. 17 MPH in his WR 200M time @ Atlanta '96. Now it hits home how fast that is.

Keep a VERY close eye on the supplements that the schools are wanting her to take (when she gets into college). There are many out there that will hurt her not only performance wise but her health.

Update

Since this thread got revived,I'll give an update. Katie's track team comes from a tiny little school of about 250 in grades 9-12. The Senior year was all about the relay teams. The four girls on the teams ran the 4x100,4x200,4x400,and Katie was 400m dash. At regionals, they missed a new regional record in the 4x200 by only . 04 and were the fastest in the state to that point. After only 11 minutes rest [15 was required, but that is another story]in the 4x100,Katie was in big trouble at fifth place in the final 100 meters of the open 400. Somehow, she won the thing and made it to state. To cap off the evening, they set a new regional record in the 4x400 at 4:01. 1 Going to state in four events--wow

State was a hot day,and started off with a baton drop in the 4x200 [8th] No way to do much,so she trotted it in as anchor. They failed to qualify the day before in the 4x100,so that set the stage for better things, and[rested] Katie finally broke 57 to finish second with a 56. 81. The 4x400 was sixth--they were just too tired, and were running against fresh teams running just that event.

The biggest suprise of all was that Katie would not accept any of the full ride offers for athletics, but was able to get enough academic scholarships and aid to attend a private college. She has not matched her high school times, but still is the university top runner with two conference firsts and a second. Winter track starts in a month.

I have seen a lot of great runners from this region--including Ted Ginn, and Brandon Saine,of the OSU present and future Buckeyes

Chris, thanks for the links. I have skimmed them, and it looks like something that the whole family might benefit from. One good thing about her college is that athletes are NOT drugged up to perform.

I know of a few colleges that hand out supplements to like the football team and such. just wanted to give you some info to help your daughter out. Would not want to see her or anyone else for that fact to start taking the wrong supplements. Let me know if you would like any more info.

The ENTIRE METS team is on our products and there is a 2 year waiting list to get into the Human Maximun Performance program.
